In the the lowland tropics of northern Colombia, 60 miles from the Caribbean coast, an enormous snake was discovered! It was the Titanoboa! An extinct genus of snake believed to have live for millions of years ago, approximately 60 to 70 million years ago.

This was a period of 10 million years immediately the dinosaur went extinct. Without the competition of the dinosaurs, this snake was the largest predator on the planet Earth for about 10 million years. Titanoboa is the biggest snake of all time. It was as long and heavy as a city bus...

The snake’s enormous dimensions shows that temperatures around the equator were once much higher. Snakes and other cold-blooded animals are restricted in body size by the temperature of where they inhabit.

Titanoboa most likely spent much of its time in the water. The sedimentary structure of the region’s rocks and the preservation of water-loving organisms (such as mangrovelike plants, crocodilians, turtles, and fishes) as fossils in the strata indicate that the region where the fossil was found was waterlogged.
