Recently, a snowstorm wreaked havoc in America. It also caused many deaths. Meanwhile, many European countries known for their cold climates are engulfed in winter heatwaves. In seven countries, including the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, which includes Denmark, the start of the year was the hottest in decades. Understand why this temperature drop occurs!
Scandinavian and Nordic countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands typically experience winters with temperatures around minus 10 degrees Celsius. This temperature stays the same in rural areas and rises to -5°C in urban areas. A double drop in temperature was also often recorded. Overall, the coldness of these countries near the Arctic Circle can be judged by the fact that mercury stays close to 20 degrees here in the summer. That is, the weather here remains winter, so it is at the height of summer. .
where is the temperature
Currently, these countries are experiencing ongoing winter heatwaves. The American newspaper Washington Post described the heat of winter in these countries as an extreme event. Speaking of the Czech Republic and Poland, temperatures were around 19 degrees Celsius during the first week of January. It's about 17 degrees while in Holland. Similar temperatures have been observed in Denmark, Latvia and Belarus. Ski areas also remained closed due to lack of snow in Switzerland, which hosts many types of snow sports this season.
Meteorologists tell the heat dome the reason for this heatwave. Europeans are encouraged to pay special attention to their health, and patients with chronic diseases should stay home as little as possible.

What is a thermal dome?
This is a special condition that occurs when the atmosphere traps warm sea air like a bottle cap and slowly releases it. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this often happens when one end of the Pacific cools and the other warms. This is also known as the La Niña condition. A heat dome lasts for about a week. The lid-like structure then weakens, allowing the trapped hot air to escape completely.
How common is this event?
The US heat dome state was created from June 2021 to July when mercury reached 49 degrees Celsius in Washington. Mercury was around 45 degrees in British Columbia, Canada, which is known for being cold. More than 500 people died as a result. Even many Washington offices, including Canada, are working from home. Also, in September 2022, many countries of the world that are generally considered cold regions will be under the spell of heat domes. Whereas before the situation was not so conspicuous.
In July 1995, a heat dome resulted in the death of 739 people in Chicago within four days. The death toll between July 12th and 15th has also been attributed to climate change. In this regard, according to a study published in the journal Nature Climate Change, heat domes are the result of climate change, and unless temperatures are quickly brought under control, these conditions form quickly.
