There are stories of past in every corner of Narayanganj city. The memories of the ancient capital of Sonargaon, the strong walls of Hajiganj Fort, and the pious ambience of Kadam Rasul Dargha Sharif are at the heart of the city’s heritage. These are not just old buildings, these are treasures of history. These places that tell us how people lived, protected their land and where they found peace in the past.

Sonargaon (1296 to 1608 A.D)

Once the capital of Bengal. This place still feels full of history. Walking through Sonargaon is like squeezing back into Bengal’s golden days. In Isa Khan’s time, Sonargan was a centre of trade in which fine muslin fabric was manufactured. A whole sari could pass through a ring.

Narrow Street

Even today the narrow streets of Panam Nagar take us back to those busy trade days. The red brick houses, old doors, windows and arches all have stories as landlords lived there once. Today at the Folk Art Museum of Sonargaon we see the traditional crafts and handmade products of that times such as weaving, pottery, and Nakshi Kantha. Visiting this museum seems like a welcome to Sonargaon’s golden history.

Me at the Fort

This fort located at Narayankaganj. It is of the smart design of a Mughal period fort in Bangladesh known as Hajiganj Fort. Made to defend against pirate attacks. It is at the bank side of Shitalakshya river. In the Mughal period Portuguese and Magh pirates often attacked, and the main defence against Narayanganj and Dhaka was Hajiganj Fort.
Soldiers stood guard on towers in thick walls all around the fort. The soldiers were prepare all time.

The Big Entrance

You can see the big entrance and old well inside. Even today the design of the walls still shows the strength and bravery of the soldiers who stood watch in this fort. It feels like they still are still present in this air.

Kadam Rasul Dargha Sharif (17th Century)

Me with My Family- Visited the DarghaIMG_20231209_190948_370.jpg

Kadam Rasul Dargha Sharif in Narayanganj is a quiet place which people come to avail spiritual comfort. It's thought that here is a preserved footprint of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Therefore it is a holy place for Muslims in Bangladesh. People come here to pray everyday, hoping they’ll get away from their troubles. Visitors like to buy prayer beads, charms and other religious items for sale in small shops around the shrine.

Awesome Entrance

The Dargha is pretty well designed too. Paying attention to it entrance right down to the main building with the good artwork and patterns. When you step inside you get a feeling of calm that is surrounded with a spiritual vibe that surrounds the air.

They are not just places of Narayanganj. These places are a part of our history, culture and spirituality. There is a strong sense of those each place place that links us to the rich past. The streets and every brick of Narayanganj still reminisce of the old Bengal, telling us our proud history.
