The Tradition That Nearly Made me Blind

Tradition and culture have existed for ages, and people have tended to live by this tradition to guide their daily activities. Tradition is a very broad term, and it differs from region to region. The tradition or way of greeting elders in a particular state may be quite different from that of another. This tradition also extends to marriage, work, and entertainment.

It's the entertainment aspect I want to talk about. This traditional entertainment nearly made me go blind. There's what we call Ekpo masquerade. This is a traditional entertainment in most villages and states. It's just that the way of operation may differ.

Masquerade is a form of entertainment whereby people who have been in-depth with native activities like consulting oracles, etc. wear costumes that look comical. These costumes extend from rafters, humour faces, red clothes, or coloured body pigment while walking naked. I'll talk about this traditional entertainment in my village and how it tends to bring about my ordeal.

In my village, masquerade parades are not just for fun but pursue people who get in their way to excite fun and chanting by the people. The villagers love it when the masquerades pursue them, and they run with the speed of light to avoid being flogged. The crowd that usually follows these masquerades to derive pleasure and entertainment is always overwhelming.

Sometimes I ask myself if these people are jobless. You'll see big ass men and women, including children, running up and down with the masquerade and enjoying the parade. Some people buy new shoes and clothes just to follow these masquerades. I wonder how entertaining viewing this parade is. At least if the masquerades are just displaying their costumes, it would make a whole lot of sense to watch, but a situation where they pursue and scare people sometimes isn't funny.

It's funny when you see people run and argue with themselves, but it's not funny when they use this masquerade parade to deprive others of their things. What do I mean? Let me go in-depth.

Anytime masquerades come out in their numbers to parade the village, a lot of people, children, adults, fathers, mothers, and grandparents come out in their numbers too to follow these masquerades.

Now that they are out, they tease these masquerades to pursue them, and when the masquerades do so, they seize the opportunity to enter people's compound to steal things that are outside. I can remember my first experience with them. I dried my shoes outside for the sun to heat. I didn't know that people use these masquerades to invade people's properties.

When they were done parading, my shoe was gone. This shoe isn't up to 2 weeks old, but it was stolen. I cried for the stolen shoe. This made us wiser next time we hear them parade the village. We'll take everything inside till they are gone.

Now to my ordeal... Like I said, they use these masquerades to parade people's homes and still things. There's this woman who planted guava tree in her compound. Anytime these masquerade followers are out, they'll enter her compound and plug her guavas forcefully and run. They'll pretend as if the masquerade is pursuing them, enter and compound, which is gateless, and then pluck and run.

This has been the usual process till the woman got tired of shouting at them. She placed a red robe on the tree to signify danger, but even at that, they didn't fear what she put. They still stole from the tree. This made her cut it off to rest.

Now it was our turn. Anytime masquerades are out, 80% of the crowd surrounds our compound to wait for the masquerade to pay homage to the youth president whose out is adjacent to us. Now, as they surround themselves around our compound with the excuse of sitting down, it would be totally impossible to chase them away because they are wild and you may receive unbearable insults even from small children.

We let them be, but we were cautious of our guava tree, which was in front of the house. The first day, they didn't touch it. Unknown to us, they planned their next coming. Then shut down 30% of the guavas from the tree, including the unripe ones. The next day they came, we were prepared. My dad blocked the guava tree with stones while we stood to flog those who entered the compound. How funny! 😂😂

These people were furious because we deprived them access. They began throwing stones from nowhere. In an attempt to escape these stones, one big stone forcefully hit the side of my right eye, and all the sands accompanying the stone entered my eyes.

I couldn't see clearly. The pain was just there, and even when the sands were removed, my right eye was cloudy. I was taken to the hospital to do an eye test. Who knows what would have happened if it hit my eyes straight with such force? I thank God it was a direct hit. The pain lasted for 2 weeks, and I was on an eye drop. Furious, my mom returned from the hospital and cut down the tree to avoid problems. She also reported to the youth president, who replied...

We can't stop tradition because of a person. You just have to let things go if the masses are demanding.

This reply made my mom even more furious that she contemplated putting a fence around the house to avoid traditional problems, as the case may be. That was how something comical and entertaining to people nearly made me blind.

What can you say about this? Should traditional entertainment be a thing of horror, fear of being robbed, or something that brings problems? This is exactly what traditional entertainment in my village is. People lack respect for other people's things. They look for ways to take it forcefully; that's why they are seen in their numbers anytime there's a parade.

At times, I do reason why some people love to take advantage of a thing that they didn't contribute in any way. The wild nature of throwing stones at owners because they restrict access is just barbaric. I remembered when our mango tree which terrorists (small children and teenagers) invade to take the fruit. In the process, they take down the unripe fruit. My parents were furious that they gave us permission to flog those terrorists. The amazing thing here is that your eye sight is restored and better than ever. Masquerade vibes ehnn, that's story for another day because my experience with them isn't lovely. Thanks for sharing this👍

I'm telling you. They use tradition to do worst things in villages today. Thanks for your comment

Thanks for the review. Appreciated

What a said incent here, so sorry about it, no wonder you have not been writing for some days now, that's why I like fenced compound all this abuse in tradition clothing wouldn't happen. But then I think you guys approached them in a wrong way, anyways the fence that your mother talked about would be a stop to it. Now that guavas I was planning to come and eat has been cut off because of masquerade.

The fence would definitely put a stop to it......

This was funny to read. As a child, I use to enjoy going out to watch the masquerades but kept a safe distance o. The chase was usually fun and it seemed entertaining. But now, I seem to care less. I've not had any horrifying encounter with them, but I feel they add no relevance to communities now. It's actually so annoying when I come back from wherever to see the masquerades and I have to find a shelter to wait while they pass. The ones in our community speaks audibly like masquerades speaks? Using that to beg for money. One time I came back to see one masquerade sitting in the middle of the street and the only way to pass was to drop money for him. Was so annoying. Anyways, sorry about your encounter. I think some communities are taking measures to cut down some of their excess and even expelling them out.
