Damages to the roof and walls due to heavy wind!

It's been heavy rain and wind for the past few days in Sri Lanka, and the same for my village. It was heard many disasters and unfortunate incident especially in the Western part of the island. Even some deaths were also reported in the past week.

And we also had to face the same fate two days ago. A wood apple tree was fell in to our rice mill damaging it's roof and few walls.

It was around 1.30 p.m and a considerable wind was blowing through the area. This tree is in between my house and the rice mill, around 10m away from the mill. I was in the home and suddenly the tree fell down. It was a big tree around 60 feet in length. As you can see in the picture, the main stem was felt in between the small space of well and the building. Otherwise it could have been a disaster.

But anyhow due to the branches, a significant damages were happpened to the dust room. And after hit by the wood apple tree a near by amabrella tree was fallen in to the main building.

Sheets were destroyed

Amidst all the incident luckily the machines and instruments were safe by an small distance. And I was there operating the machines, half an hour ago before coming to the lunch.

Anyhow around 20 asbastos sheets were completely destroyed, along with the part of a block wall. It was a huge burden for us with the current economic conditions in the country.

As you can see in the below picture, the stem was broken just above the ground level. Part of the tree has been slowly decayed in that place, which is not visible to the naked eye.

ACtually there a few big trees around my house including coconut, jack fruit, mango, tamarin, neem etc. With this inciden, some of the officials also came to our hous as this wood apple tree seems just fine from outside. We never identified the risk earlier. And with their request as well, we remove two cocounut trees, a neem tree and a tamarind tree around my house today, that seem unsafe.

Eventhough trees are very valuable, please pay attention to those around your area. The wind and heavy rain are usual these days, we always have to identify and manage the risks.
