The perfect light in Nature

What would have happened if Scientists could not manufacture electric light bulb?
Nature had it first for us. Please permit me to introduce you to this wonderful cold light with no side effect. Which scientist now copy.

Firefly an insect that produced a perfect light at night. This insect is found mostly in tropical and temperate region. It is also found locally in my area which I now want to introduce to you.
They usually come out at night during breeding season and in a very large number.
The heat produce by electric bulb is very hot and can burnt. It resulted in wasted energy, by that I mean, giving a little fraction ie only 10 percent of it's energy as light wheras 90% is wasted as heat.
In contrast this tiny light producing insect waste so little energy as heat which I'm going to illustrate as I proceed.

How fire flys make it's light?
The belly of a firefly contains an organic substance called luciferin. "When oxygen is drawn into the abdomen through a tube called the abdominal trachea"source. the oxygen mixes with luciferin, and the chemical reaction results in a yellow glow, while in some species, the resulting glow is a reddish - green flash. Also the firefly has a cell called uric-acid crystals. This contribute to reflect the light away from the insect belly.
According to Scientists, the firefly uses its light as a means of attracting its mates. It has also been observed that different species of firefliers produce various rhythm and flash patterns. This explains why they come out at night in large number during raining season.

Light quality?
The light produce by this tiny insect is by far superior to the incandescent light bulb and fluorescent light ever produced by man.
The following shows how efficient firefly light is:

  • Incandescent light bulb emits only 10% of it energy as light, the rest is basically wasted, discharged as heat.

*Fluorescent bulb perform much better, emitting 90% of it's energy as light but not to be compared with this tiny insect
