A statistical study determined that, approximately 25% of the population, we have difficulty automatically identifying which is the right and the left. The origin of this is related to a specific area of the brain being this the angular gyrus. Now, surely at some point we have asked ourselves "Why is there this confusion?"
Well, although it seems absurd or for some, very striking, the reality is that there are several of us who have this confusion and, the statistical percentage mentioned above details it. On certain occasions we have found ourselves in a situation where someone sends us an instruction in which, we must immediately locate which is the right or left, for the moment we doubt and technically it is normal.
The doubt that invades us in that moment of confusion, is not synonymous with being clumsy because, in reality we are not, however, we must understand that this action is a very complex neurological process and our brain does not always process it quickly.
The constant confusion between left and right develops from adolescence
This confusion is also caused by the stress factor that invades us at that moment when we feel the pressure. However, neurologists recommend that, to reduce this problem, we can perform mental exercises or, failing that, apply a strategy that allows us to keep the mind active and agile.
One of them can be, practice several times a day to stop for a few seconds to evaluate where the left and right is in a place where we are at that time; without a doubt, this can help us reduce the problem and at the same time, we practice mental dexterity to avoid memory problems that may arise in the not too distant future.
When does this confusion occur and why?
At the moment, there is no scientific research that has proven a total cause, however, neurologists agree that despite the fact that 25% of the population presents it as a problem constantly, 99% of us have had it even once.
Perhaps for us it is something simple the issue of identifying which is the left and right, however, for our brain it is a great effort. What's more, for him it is easier to detect when something is up or down but, in the directions it is not so. Neurological science explains that by identifying whether a target is on one side or the other, it requires our brain to carry out the most complex neurobiological process it has.
The confusion between left and right can generate anxiety
When identifying the right or left, we have to integrate the perceptual and at the same time sensory informational process because our memory is responsible for processing the function of language. This happens because, our brain lateralization is responsible for organizing all the information we have provided in order to start the process of identifying everything.
Due to all the above, we have no doubt that, identifying in which area the right or left is in fractions of thousandths, is not an action that is carried out quickly and, neither in automatic because, all this has its great processes and even moments.
The identification of the right or left side goes beyond being something punctual, when we have this problem, at the moment it arises we lose orientation and it is difficult for us to coordinate the actions we will carry out. On the other hand, a study carried out by doctors Anne Ellison, Uri Bayer and Michael Hirnstein, details that confusion is generated because the angular rotation, this being in charge of identifying the information we emit, is not activated immediately therefore, it is not possible for us to coordinate correctly.
On the other hand, this confusion in some cases has been more serious because, by not identifying which is the right or left, they have problems writing or assuming certain mathematical skills. It should be noted that this problem is known as Dyslexia and is part of the learning difficulties. In the context of psychology, the problem of identifying the right and left in level of severity is known as Gerstmann Syndrome.
Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that manifests itself in the initial academic stage
How can we avoid confusion?
After being clear that we are a large statistic that we tend to confuse the left and right, it was time to know what we can do to solve this situation and, the main recommendation given by psychologists and neurologists is that we must accept that it is normal to make this type of mistakes.
In the same way, keep in mind that stress or being in a very noisy place, are part of the factors that generate this confusion therefore, if we are in a context like these and we get confused, let's not lose our calm since, there are many distracting agents that are preventing our concentration.
If we want to definitively solve this problem, let's work on improving attention because, if we manage concentration very well, this situation will no longer be a difficulty. Similarly, for our daily practice, let's place our thumbs at a right angle to the index. In this way, the hand that will be representing the letter "L", in the orientation, appropriate, will be the left area.
To conclude, if we want to take advantage of our cell phone to solve this problem, we can download applications with orientation and laterality themes since, this is of great help because it is considered a very useful mental exercise for children, young people and adults.
