How to write that perfect diary post...

Steemians don’t like writing diary posts, they LOVE writing diary posts.

At least 90% of posts I read on a daily basis is post related to “The diary game”. Is it wrong? Not at all but what is frustrating is that 80% of these posts are not quality posts.

The overall feeling is that Steemians write a diary entry just for the sake of posting a post. The idea of “The diary game” is for us to learn from each other and for this to happen we need to share our culture, our countries, our believes etc.

Today I am going to take you step by step through the process of writing a diary entry.

First let’s take a closer look at two terms, “diary” and “diary entry”.

Diary – It is your personal record keeping of your thoughts, your feelings, and your events of a specific day.

Diary entry – It is the form in which you write your thoughts, feelings, and your events of a specific day.

Of importance is to understand that it is not just about what you did for the day but your full experience of the day.

To write a quality diary post there are 5 steps you must follow.

1. Think about your day
2. Plan your post
3. Choose your images
4. Write your draft
5. Check… check… check and then post!

If you follow these steps you cannot go wrong and soon you will be noticed by Steemians.

Step 1 – Think about your day

The most important factor which is going to make your diary post successful is the thoughts you are putting into your day.

You cannot just start firing away and start writing about your day. I believe that this is where so many Steemians go wrong. They just start writing to… write something. No, you have to reflect back on your day.
Give it some thought before you “put it to paper”.

The best way to do this is to ask yourself some questions.

  1. What did I do today?
  2. Did I enjoy what I did? Why?
  3. What did I experience today? Was it something new?
  4. Have I learned anything from my day?
  5. Was there a decision I had to take today?
  6. What is that one thing I can share with others so that they can learn more about my believes, my culture etc.?
  7. What was different from my day?
  8. Did other people have an impact on my life today?
  9. What must I do to make tomorrow different?
  10. What would I like to change from my day?
I have given you 10 examples of questions you can ask yourself which will help you to plan your diary entry. If you choose 5 of these questions and write 50 words on each one of them you already have a post with 200 words.

Once you have your answers to the questions you will have to decide in which section of your post you are going to write them down.

2. Plan your post

A diary post can be broken up into 4 parts.

WhatHowWord count
The headingThat first impression you make on the readernot more than 12 words
The introductionWhat will make the reader want to read your post+/- 30 to 50
The body of the postThe various sections of your day300+ words
The closureHow you will close your day+/- 30 to 50 words

The heading – Short and sweet!!!

The heading or title of your post is what is being displayed all over Steemit. It is the one thing that will give you the edge over the thousands of post which is being posted on Steemit every day.

It is in sight of the reader at all times. Best of all, it is in BOLD and it cannot be missed.
You cannot compete with a lengthy heading that doesn’t say a thing.

Example:
Burnsteem25 | CLUB100 | THE DIARY GAME | Doing my morning routine and meeting with my friends for coffee after cleaning the house and feeding the dog 05 September by @patjewell

My friends this is the kind of headings we see on Steemit every day!

DON’T
put burnsteem, club status, your country or any of these things in your heading. It should be in your tagline.
DON’T
write a long heading.
DON’T
put your name in the heading.

What I often do with my post is that I write my heading last. Once I have my draft I know what will catch the eye.

The introduction – Keep the interest!

You have written a great heading and you now have the attention of the reader. What comes next is the introduction of your post. You have to make the reader want to read further.

Example:
I am good today. How are you? Thank you for reading my post today. i woke up and I brushed my teeth.

You are not going to get the reader to read further if you start by thanking them for reading your post nor by starting to write about brushing your teeth. No! Get them excited!

DON’T
forget that the first few words of your introduction will be visible under your heading therefor make it count.
DON’T
greet everyone and ask them how they are. It is your diary. If you want to greet someone you can greet your diary with “Dear diary” or “Hi there”.
DON’T
start writing about what you did. Keep the interest.
  • Example: “What an eventful day I had today. I know you are curious for me to tell you about it but you will just have to wait a bit longer”.
  • DON’T
make the introduction to your diary post long. All that is need of it is to capture the attention. For sure no longer than two sentences.

Your diary should be filled up with what you did during the course of the day.

The body of the post - Share facts!

Once you have your introduction you can now divide your post into the various sections you want to write about. The best is to divide your post into three or four sections.

    I normally divide the body of my post into the following;
    • Waking up
    • My early morning
    • My afternoon
    • My late afternoon/evening

You don’t have to follow this. You can divide your post into “Going to work”, “Shopping for the family”, “How the day ended” etc.

There are various reasons why we must divide our posts into sections.

    1. It makes reading easier
    2. It looks neater
    3. It will keep the reader’s attention
    4. It allow you specific “places” in which you can answer those questions you have asked yourself right at the beginning of this post
    5. It will allow you the opportunity to write enough words (minimum of 100 words per section)

Of importance is that you must synchronize your events. In other words, place what you write in the order in which it happened.

    DON’T
    write garbage but be honest.
    DON’T
    follow other authors, be unique.
    DON’T
    be boring.
    DON’T
write the same thing over and over. Example: “I went to the barber to cut my hair. The barber cut my hair.”
    DON’T
forget to write to catch the eyes. Short sentences, enough paragraphs, making use of divider and those perfect images.
    DON’T
forget to share your thoughts, your feeling, and the event.

    The closure - Bitter sweet!

A diary is your best friend!

It is patient, it is tolerant but it also needs to be treated with respect. End your diary politely with a conclusion on the overall experience of your day, what you have learned and what you are looking forward to doing in the next few days.

    DON’T
overdo your conclusion. Keep it short.
    DON’T
forget that writing a diary post is like writing to a person. End your “conversation” on a high note.
    DON’T
include other Steemians in your diary posts. It is your diary and not there’s.

    3. Choose your images

The two questions I am asked most of the time,
    1. How can I get SC01 to notice me?
    2. How many images must I post?

SC01 attention – You will get attention only by writing good content AND posting good images.

How many images to post in a diary post – It depends. If you are traveling you are going to share more images than when you are sharing just a normal day. Three to four images for a normal diary post is enough.
No matter the kind of post I am posting I will never post more than 6 images.

    Choose your best images!

Gosh! You can tell someone today to take care of the images and then tomorrow they do the exact same thing.
If you don’t have good images rather post copyright-free images.

If you go shopping, how do you shop? You shop with your eyes! You look around for the product, you look at what is on display, you look for good quality and you look for a product that fits your purse.
Why not do this with your images also? Readers also shop with their eyes.

Your post can be fantastic but one skew photo can ruin it.

Products on a shelf are labeled. You also have to “label your images”. Tell the reader where it is, what it is etc.

    DON’T
    post large images!! Never ever!
    DON’T
post more than one selfie! Your diary knows how you look.
    DON’T
post images that are not clear or out of focus.
    DON’T
    post images that are skew!
    DON’T
post an image more than once.
    DON’T
post images that are not related to your diary post.

    4. Write your draft

You have to write a draft first!

I always say that my draft is putting my story to paper.

Your draft allows you to get your thoughts together and it enables you to check and change your post. Changes you will make, that I can assure you of.

“Do not imagine that the first draft of your book is the one that will be published. My latest novel, The Sins of the Father, was 14 drafts and took approximately 1000 hours.” - Jeffrey Archer

    DON’T
think that if you post from your phone you don't have to write a draft. You must!
    DON’T
read your draft only once. Read it over and over and over.

    5. Check… check… check and then post!

No matter what great author you are you still have to check your post.

    Spelling, grammar, and punctuation matter!

The beauty these day is that you have so many free application which can help you in checking your posts. All that is required of you is to copy, paste and start. It is as easy as 1, 2, and 3!

Grammarly tells us that the most common mistake authors/bloggers make when they write a post is that they use the same word often in the post. It is that “and then”, I had breakfast. “And then” I went to work. “And then”...

    Beware not to do this!

What I normally do is that just before I click that “post” button I read my post out loud. Gosh! I cannot tell you how many times I have found mistakes by doing this.

    DON’T
post a diary entry without checking it!!!

All that remains is for me to share a few extra tips for you to use when you write that next diary post.

    Tips:

    • Challenge yourself
    • Be different each time
    • If you cannot think about anything to write, don’t!
    • Don’t start your post with a HUGE selfie!
    • Don’t write a diary post that consist of less than 400 words
    • If you write a fact make sure it is correct
    • Remember you are writing to your diary and you are not writing for us!
    • If you get stuck, get up and make a cup of tea or coffee
    • Enjoy what you write!

I'm sharing one of my diary posts in the hope that it will help you when you write your next diary post. The Diary Game, 14/06/2022: The big move!

I agree with each single suggestion, but it seems not possible to follow them all at once. Me for my own part, I could not write such a diary post. (I really tried, you could get the draft.)

Regarding your own diary post (as you linked it), I feel that this was a very special and very "rich-contently" day. Nobody has every day so interesting and exciting, and no one can every day write such an interesting post. As I might suggest, read or look on daily posts by @udabeu. These daily posts are diary-like but unique and creative, containing much playing with words and images. And although the author has developed a re-usable concept, he still is working for more than 2 hours on each of this posts. Who wants to go such a strong way?

It is good to know that you can learn something from my post.
    Good luck!

This is really a good guide. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. This will really shape our diary game.

Wonderful! I am glad that you found it and that you can put it to good use.
Remember to take part in the Share Your Day contest in Steem For Ladies. You can put the tips to good use.(•ิ‿•ิ)
    Good luck!

This is good advice for the guide how to write a diary on steemit platform. Thank you

The pleasure is all mine! ☕

This is really valuable content. For me, these tips are valid not only for diary posts but for any publication. To be honest, I am not a pro writer. But I try to keep my blog a quality one. So, have to put extra effort into creating an article.

This is very useful for me. Hope this post will get more attention from the users.

    Thank you!
    Bets Regards!

Okay, let's forget about my post first... cricket! I don't like cricket.. I LOVE cricket! Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. What a nail biting game! I must be honest, I had my money on Bangladesh but in the end, the best team won.
Closer to home, Zimbabwe. Oh my word! I love it! (•ิ‿•ิ)

Now, over to my post. Steemit won't be Steemit without "The Diary Game". The best we can do is to help Steemians to make them these posts there best posts.
Thank you for reading, engaging and resteeming the post. It is appreciated!

I like reading writing that is full of encouragement, motivation and how to write a good article. I think everyone needs to learn, there is a process and it takes time to be able to write as expected.
some of the people who have been in steemit "since the past" to this day are not a group of people who are ready to work, chosen people, smart, great and good at writing. They even just learned to write since they were on this platform. The steemit generation will continue to change. some come and some will take retirement. I also hope that everyone not only comes for the purpose of "seeking" but can also "give" well.

I hope your post becomes an important lesson for us and everyone else so that we can make changes to write the theme of "the diary game" properly and correctly. Thank you so much mrs. @patjewell

And that is all I want... I just one person to learn from my post, to put it to practice and then to teach one other person.
Soon we will see a change on the platform.

Thank you for your kind words! You have given me the courage to share more "learning" content!

para ser un éxito, por supuesto a través del proceso. feliz de compartir con ustedes

We hope so, hopefully there will be changes and let's wait..

Wow! It's always happy to meet a Cricket lover. Did you watch the Yesterday one? We defeated the mighty Indians and almost come to the finals. Well, to be honest, we were not the favorites. And lots of negative feedback were there. So, this performance is something to remember for all...

I watched the highlights this afternoon. It was close and.. entertaining. Let's not say anymore. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Tomorrow is big cricket for us again, the 3rd test against England. If only we can repeat the match we had at Lords I will be so happy!

There is always room for learning and improvement... After Reading your post I must say this post is very informative and we all should learn some tips from here.

    Very well-written post.
Thank you for sharing with us.

Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to me.
If I can help to improve just 1% of all The Diary Game post I will be more than happy. (•ิ‿•ิ)
    Best wishes!

An important education for writing a diary, I learned a lot from your post. thanks for sharing

It is for me to say... thank you for reading!
If it can help my fellow Steemians I will be extremely happy! (•ิ‿•ิ)

Agreed ! I will also do my best

A very useful post for all steemians in the world, especially those who often make posts about Diary Games in any community, hopefully with the presence of your post @patjewell can make posting diary games more interesting and entertained when people read them.

I truly hope so my friend! Fingers cross 🤞
I am already seeing a big difference in various posts of Steemians I have helped.
Ps: Your kind words are appreciated!

Thanks for fingers cross and ur appreciation 🤠🤗..

I am starting to improve the quality of my posts every day, both for entry contests or for the diary game and others too, if we are used to quality things every day, in the future steemians will also get used to the quality of posts, especially in diaries like your post @patjewell ,,
Btw I just made a post about my favorite food in the sec s4-w2 contest, don't forget to visit, hope it usefull 😃😁

I can see improvements in the posts of various Steemians and that warms my heart. It is only us Steemians who can make Steemit a better place.
Thank you for your kind words!
Ps: It is bedtime in South Africa but I have made a note to read your post first thing tomorrow morning. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Now, don't forget to CC me in your next diary post. I will review it for you with pleasure. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Good luck and keep on writing!
    Ps: Thanks for the visit!

Tomaré en consideración tus sugerencias, no sé porque no tengo mucha visibilidad para los curadores y aveces es frustrante porque veo trabajdos con menos acabados que recieb más votos. Espero me funcionen @patjewell.

De hecho, soy de las que me gustaba escribir otras cosas antes que los diarios, pero veo que aun siguen teniendo mucha aceptación, así que he dejado la escritura creativa a un lado por esta misma razón.

    Hello my friend!
Just remember there are hundreds of "The Diary Game" post every day with the result that you have to compete with so many other authors.
Never stop your creative writing! You are good in it so continue with it. When you do write a diary post, make it your best.
I know that you are capable of doing it.
Just keep on doing what you are doing!

    Congratulations!

If you choose 5 of these questions and write 50 words on each one of them you already have a post with 200 words.

Oh, I'm still on breakfast and already learned a completely new thing:
    5x 50 = 200
This is to give to my day a very new shape, I suppose. So let's see what I will have to write in the evening!
    ;-))

Haha! We actually had a bet on the go.. hubby and I.
I told him that there will be someone who will notice it and he said no ways!
    Well done, I won!
I was just stupid, I should have put some STEEM on the bet. (•ิ‿•ิ)

    Hihihi , hahaha ?
Hmm , exellent points but written from a superwisdomteachers perspective which makes me decide to not like You , hihi .

    Great post👍 Reshared on @southernafrica

There is always something great to learn from you and each time I get to see an update from you, it gives me great joy. Sincerely!

DON’T follow other authors, be unique

This serves as a reminder. Tried applying this some time ago but it felt like something important was missing and I began to follow the trend — what I see everyone else doing. It's time to BE UNIQUE.

About the draft. Am I guilty?

    I can't tell. 😅

Thank you for sharing this with us. Steemians are learning from you.

It is great when I read that authors are learning from my posts. Thank you!

I was also guilty following others. With my return to Steemit I did it for a whole month! It was only when I started to do my own thing that I started to be successful. You can do it!

Guilty? Umh... that look tells me that you are guilty (•ิ‿•ิ)

    Ps: Thanks for the visit!

    This is interesting to read.

In summary, keep it short and simple.

Most helpful blog. Learned a lot from this guideline post. Everyone can learn a lot if experienced people like you post such guidelines for users.

Oh wow! I appreciated your kind words so early in the morning this side of the world.
That's all we as leaders can do, motivate our fellow Steemians to writer better post.

Thank you again for this piece.
I would really work on myself.

    Hello Ruthie my friend!
I am glad you've enjoyed the post.
It will be a great honor for me to see what you have learned from the post when incorporated into your posts.
I know you can do it!

Yeah more practice is the key. Thank you for your hard works.

Such kind words! Thank you!!! 🎕

Waow! thanks so much ma. this is what I have been looking for here. Now I know what dairy game is all about and how to write a perfect one. The divine of how, what and word count is perfect. Again the DON'Ts and TIPS are great expository. But what if the dairy is more of pictures. There are dairies that pictures will explain better than just describing it in writing. Anyway, I will put it in practice, as they say 'practice makes perfect'. You have really help me on this ma. Thanks.

But what if the dairy is more of pictures

    Good morning my friend!
    It is not a problem to share pictures provided that;

    1. Your diary is still more than 300+ words
    2. The pictures are neat and not large. Best to share them 2 next to each other
    3. You name your pictures with a short description
    4. There are words in between the pictures.

If you can get this right you will have a winning post.
    Good luck!
Ps: You are more than welcome to CC me with a short note if you want me to have look for you (•ิ‿•ิ)

    Posted using SteemPro Mobile

Awh!!! It is always so nice to get such good feedback.
I hope it is going to help you.
    Good luck!

    And another plea of mine:

Let's all together NOT speak in terms of perfection but rather of care. There are no perfect posts and no recipes for such ones; there are only hints and tips and suggestions to write carefully. We cannot make the world a better world while looking for the perfect world.

Maybe the word should be "ultimate"
Perfect for me means to be correct in every detail (•ิ‿•ิ)
