We cannot observe the traditional fishing scene of that eratodayEarlier when the fields, ponds, and canals dried up, the villagers would go down to fish in groups with plates and bowls. Villagers used to catch fish by irrigating water from canals, bills, and river channels. The villagers used to dip their hands in the empty water of ponds, drains, and canals and pick up fish one by one.
The pond has several indigenous species of fish including Shoal, Taki, Punti, Khalshe, Kai, Magur, Shing, Tangra, and Punti.
According to the locals, the water in the rivers, canals, and low-lying areas started drying up in the intense heat and intense sun of Bhadra month. Different species of fish came out of the sunken ponds and took refuge in different reservoir channels. And when the water in various reservoirs dried up, then the residents of villages and Bengal got busy fishing by hand.
Fishing in knee-deep water in the hot sun is another joy of rural Bengal. But such a scene of fishing is not seen anymore.
At present, the Upazila's rivers, canals, and small and big canals have shrunk a lot. These rivers, canals, and sinkholes, however, overflow with water during monsoons. Low-lying areas become waterlogged during monsoons. But the fishing condition is not like before. Every year when the rainy season ends, the water recedes. Festivals dedicated to fishing are held in these lowlands. Men, women, children, and senior citizens all love fishing during that celebration.
There is an informal competition to see who can catch the most fish.
Earlier it was possible to catch a variety of indigenous fish, but now it is not. The fishing festival is not flourishing as it used to be because the fish sanctuary is gradually shrinking. Local fish sources are gradually decreasing.
Fish stocks are getting smaller. Because of this, there are no indigenous fish in the rivers and canals. Various types of farmed fish have displaced it. The canals are closing day by day. As a result, our native fish are disappearing.
People catch fish in rivers, ponds, and other bodies of water using various methods. Some catch these fish and sell them as a source of income. There, people of all shapes and ages - young, old, small - fish. These scenes will make anyone happy, all things considered. A strange fact due to my passion for fishing. Fishing requires a lot of patience and is addictive. Fishing in this area has increased significantly in the last few years.
