Drawing is considered an art form. But many people don't understand the science behind drawing. You may have seen someone draw something good and said, "Wow, you can draw!".

Drawing helps the artist to convey his ideas to the viewers. It's an interesting transition from an idea to reality. But how's that done?

Draw what you see, not what you think you see.

Skillful artists try as much as possible to draw what they see and not what they think they see. There's a way our brain sees an image and the way our hands translate them. Let's take an example, think of drawing an eagle.

You've seen an eagle before. Yellow beak, white head, black wings, what more do you need? You have a reference and you're confident in using it. The problem is that when you're done drawing, you'll end up with a yeagle and not an eagle. And you'll start wondering, what went wrong?

The problem is that you drew what your brain thought it was seeing not what you actually saw. In this example, you need to look below what you see. It's no longer an eagle but some lines and shapes. That's essentially what you're seeing. Shapes and lines.

Artists tend to think of things as small shapes. They start with small shapes, arranging them in relation to one another and refining the shapes to create depth and a resemblance of the subject.

Drawing is a learnable skill and like any other skill, it takes a considerable amount of time to master.

Anybody can learn how to draw, regardless of what you think. That single mind shift, changes everything.

Thanks for reading and have a great day 😊

"You draw what you see, not what you think you see."

I would agree to this. A friend of mine who’s skilled at drawing once shared a similar insight with me—not in these exact words, but with the same idea. He said that when you draw, you should focus on the individual lines and shapes rather than the entire image. This way, the process becomes much easier and less overwhelming.

I’d like to add as well that this approach applies to almost anything we aim to master. We usually start with the basics and gradually build on that foundation. In writing, for example, if we want to convey an idea or craft a compelling argument, we don’t simply jot down every thought and expect others to understand. We start with something easy, the basics—the ABCs—and then build up to words, sentences, and so on. Over time, it all becomes easier and more natural.

can you draw @henryclive? It would be great if you show something.

Everybody can draw. I can if I'm forced to. 😅 But I'm not that good.

Perhaps you are a great scribbler. Join and scribble an oval with us. You never know.
See @hive-120695 for the scribble lesson 2. It is a comment contest as well.

Glad you suggested. I'll give it a try.

Thank you 💜

So if a child is drawing it isn't drawing because whatever is on paper, on a wall or in sand is not made by the standards you set or are set for artists? That sounds a bit strange to me. Also who decides what an artist is? Some schools where people learn to draw by certain rules and if they draw or colour out of the lines it's not art.

Is it only art if students are the copy cats of Rembrandt or Van Gogh since that's what art school teach? A way to do it in the same way as the artist they named the school after.

If we do that if we write it's called: Plagiarism but if it comes to drawing and paintings it's a good thing.

@tezzmax and @grebmot what do you think? How about you @jiva34?

I hate this very debate so much. A lot of people believe Art is something anyone can do but let's just say we have people who are artists by hobby, and we have artists by circumstances and then professional visual Artists.

Just state the one you are and live by the tag.

#betterlife #drawing #comment

What is the debate you hate? The topic is "drawing". There's no debate about being an artist. We can talk about the first drawings made by Adam or Eve or caveman. We can talk about the very first drawing we made or remember as a toddler.

I tell you something about what I did... I knew my father never paid attention and wanted to prove I was right. He always gave the same answer as I showed him something. So I drew something childish and ugly and said: Look Dad! He looked up and said: wow that's a great drawing.
I turned around and left the room and still feel the disappointment.

Lol... I get you.

I'm going to cheat and consult the dictionary.
"What is the definition of art?
Art is the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, like painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, or theatre. If you love the creative process, maybe you'll devote your life to art."
It can also be questioned, "What is music?"

But the question is: what is a drawing or more... say something about "drawing". You lately made a sphere (ball) so?
We start at kindergarten if not earlier and some have drawing lessons at school, other not. Drawing is as old as humans are, the pictures (cavemen), the little drawings (Chinese) the letters we write.. it's a way to communicate and who decides what looks good or not and who is an artist? If it comes to art it's a personal taste one that also comes with how we are raised or educated.

I'm not in any way setting standards for any artist. There are different art styles and many styles created by artists themselves and I really appreciate that.

I'm just trying to say that if we try to see things on a smaller level, we can try to dislodge ourselves from our idea of what our subject is when drawing. Instead, we think of it in simple forms. Most artists start with simple shapes like cones, cylinders and cubes to develop whatever idea they have.

It doesn't matter what art style it is, if it's simplified it's easier to construct and convey your idea easily.

I don't know what art schools teach but I know they certainly don't encourage plagiarism.

That's what I think. I have tried simplifying and I can say it works. Because I know I wasn't that good in drawing.

I even see it when I learn other things. I try to simplify them before developing on the simple layers. Especially when I read.

I'm definitely not an expert and this is just what I wanted to share. A great day to you. Thanks again.

Art schools (already in the old days) did teach everyone to draw/paint in the same way as the master did. The students even painted with the master the same painting and it was for sure not always made by the master himself.

Thanks for replying it's appreciated and a great weekend to you.

Why exactly is it we talk about artists and not about "drawing"? I am so curious. It must be a very long time ago you were a child.

No, I'm trying to explain why I said "Draw what you see, not what you think you see"

You see, this doesn't really apply to drawing imaginative ideas. No, I wasn't referring to that. Imagination comes from whoever's drawing at the moment and what ideas they wish to convey.

I was trying to say that in drawing realism, that is, in trying to get a realistic drawing of something, you draw what you see, not preconceived ideas of what your brain thinks it should look like.

Do you understand what I'm trying to say?

And about being a child, hmmmmm 😅

Simply put, drawing is an embodiment of creativity. It is the use of lines, forms and even shapes to communicate visually. It is usually done on surfaces like paper, walls etc. using pencils, charcoals, markers, pens etc.

Through drawings, one can visually express thoughts, emotions, ideas, scenes etc. Drawings can be both animate and inanimate.

Drawing is as old as the ancient men and their writings which were called "hieroglyphics"

I believe in the acronym I call ABCD, where

A= Any

B = Body

C= Can

D= Draw

This simply means that everyone and anyone can draw. A person's drawing skills improve over time and over various practices. While some may be gifted artisans other could become artists through learning it as a skill

Over the years, I have learned that one of the ways a learner can learn speedily and have a long-lasting memory through drawing. I literally have to scribble drawings as illustrations for my learners in school, and they can pick them no matter how crowded it is, even with a stronger memory than mine.
The act and skill of Drawing is really beautiful 😍
I'll invite @atimisaac @kafio @usherray

I also believe in the ABCD acronym. And I tell you, it takes a lot of time, just like any other skill. But how does drawing improve one's memory? And what if someone is an auditory or kinesthetic learner?

  ·  9 days ago (edited)

@bluelavender Some learners learn faster when they see or have an imagination of what they are learning. So I tend to scribble some look-alike drawings to aid their imaginations, (this is usually an interesting session of my class, and it comes with lots of giggles with me pretending I can't draw). They never forget such learning, even for a moment!
I remember teaching age 3-4 about classes of plants where we had creepers, climbers, trees, flowers etc. They remember every bit of it because of the look-alike pictures drawn that they even pick it out on the TV with lots of shouts.
Auditory or kinesthetic learners are not missing out on learning as well, because what they listen to and want to feel while learning Drawing goes further to make the teaching much more alive so that it cannot be easily erased or forgotten from their memory.

It's interesting to hear that your drawings make teaching easier but drawings are also important to express feelings. Strange I haven't heard anyone mention that.
If you can't talk you can still make a drawing and there's no need to draw very well for that.
Teachers even label children because of what they draw and let parents show up. An interesting thing about drawings is also that everyone sees what he likes/wants to see influenced by?

It reminds me of a drawing a child made about the vacation. The teacher saw the parents and children hanging with a rope on their necks. The parents were ordered to come for a chat (or perhaps only the mother) who smiled and said the child had drawn very well what they did in their past vacation.the family had gone snorkelling in the sea.

I am still curious how that teacher felt. It also reminds me of psychiatrists asking patients what they see if pictures with dots on it are shown...

Just like @bluelavender, I like to know what you mean that through drawings one can learn speedily and have a long-lasting memory. A long-lasting memory for what? If that is the case it should work the other way around as well.

If it comes to the ABCD and anybody can draw there's no need for skills or improving of it. The only thing that's in the way it how we label what we see. Good, bad, art, no art.
There are plenty of artists who can't draw at all and they are famous because of? Perhaps the skill of someone who promoted them?

Thanks for giving me something to think about. I wait for your answer.

As humans one of the ways we tend to learn is through visuals which drawing

is a part of so through drawings one can give form to what one learns. Imagine having an idea of what a plant cell looks like on a drawing book even without viewing it yet under a microscope, it is very possible to give a description of it based on the image seen

Everyone can draw relatively, but then some people major in lt and this involves learning certain skills to aim at perfection.

Those artists who are only famous from other people's drawing skills can become better if they allow themselves to. Remember, while some are gifted artists, some can become good artists through practice.

Autodidacts learn by vision, no one taught them to draw. I believe skills will always improve if we practise and keep doing it.

Thank you for your comment 👍

Saya mengundang teman terbaik, @bahrol @aneukpineung78 @jasminemary.

Hmm.

Terimakasih pak nyen atas tanggapan nya.

Tetap semangat pak nyen.
Semoga menyenangkan.
🤗🤗☺️☺️☺️

You are right, images reflect what we think.

Thanks for inviting me.

You're welcome.

In my opinion, drawing is a scribble, a pencil stroke on an object or book with many techniques according to our imagination. We can do this activity with various techniques and apply a touch of color to make it more beautiful and interesting to look at.

Drawing can be done anytime, and most importantly according to our mood.If we draw in a relaxed and comfortable state, the images we produce will be more beautiful and become works of art that make imagination, ideas, and emotional turmoil more valuable.

Let's share your opinions @sriiza,@ulfatulrahmah and @khairiani.

#betterlife #comment #drawing

Do you have experiences with drawing? How about drawing in the sand? Is it possible that there are people who will never draw? Can it be drawings are the first letters and words we used, a way of communication.

I wonder about the relaxed state you mention. Why should a drawing be better if the mood is better or more relaxed? Does this mean that all drawings should be about flowers, butterflies and candies?

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Jika Anda memposting sesuatu, tolong tandai saya.

You are right, I believe emotions most times play a major role for people who need a muse to draw.
I remember asking my learners to draw whatever the like to draw that year while others scribbled cartoon characters, look alike of mummy, daddy and their teachers, a particular child had a weird drawing of himself and siblings ( as explained) and coloured weirdly too. When I pointed my HOD to it she confirmed the boy had a traumatic experience from an accident and that his brother was still in the hospital in coma.

IMG-20241023-WA0017.jpg

I believe drawing are lines that represents something and you don't need to be an artist to draw. Children draw and I truly wonder why no one mentions them since the topic is "drawing" nothing more or less.
I like what you made.

Are you an artist not selling his art? If that is the case you are a hobbyist and don't like or feel the need to live from it or share it with those who might like it.

Thank you for participating.

@joslud @tezzmax

I'm gald you finally highlighted the differences yourself.

I highlighted nothing but mentioned more than once that we talk about drawings and I keep wondering why we ended up with "art". Are there only artists here?

I replied as an artist.

so you are more interested in trying out something new or creating if you have an idea in mind than that drawing is a part of your life. Do you like to give scribbling an oval a try? If so see @hive-120695. It is also a comment contest.
A great day to you.

The image could be the result of the realization of a pencil point designed by humans so that it becomes a shape. Or in other words, based on lines designed with imagination to produce a work of art.

But that's not enough. In this modern era, we can already get the image from the lens capture. So we can immortalize certain moments in the form of documentation.

what do you think @rumaisha?...

#betterlife #comment #drawing

The image may be gotten from a single lens capture and that's what differentiates it from a drawn piece. In a drawn piece, the artist not only aims to capture a resemblance but also the emotions and identity of the subject. He may add other elements to exaggerate these feelings and convey these ideas to the viewer. The art of drawing, definitely has it's specialty and has a meaning that is conveyed by the creator. Just like this world is---a beautiful cosmos.

@elcebe Pictures more seem more realistic and original but drawings, in any form conveys an idea. What do you think?

The lens capture image I am referring to is not a likeness produced by an artist, but camera lens which is which is an optical component which functions to collect light from the object which is focused on image formation.

So yes, what you said is true, that artists add other elements to their works that have very captivating meanings. However, we do not necessarily know the meaning of the ideas conveyed by the artist, even the images drawn by the artist are very unrealistic, In terms of the painting, we don't know what it looks like, but it has a very soulful meaning.

Isn't that right, buddy?...

Drawing is one thing I live for and for me, Drawing is the soul of Visual Arts. I have seen lots of Artists that don't draw often, they prefer to do their actual artworks which is beautiful but I tell you, for an artist, especially a painter and a draughtsman, your strength, growth and confidence develops well as you draw often.

You could use any style, any technique, draw anything, just keep drawing and enjoy the process!

Cc. @wakeupkitty @ezuntimmy @joslud

I intend to believe that if you are an artist it is a lifestyle so you draw and if not you sketch in your mind and if not you see the ideas for the next drawing not matter what you do.

A question for you. What is the difference between a drawing and a drawing labelled as art?

Is art the result of coincidence or is art a planned act, the idea to create something?

Any form of expression that can't be seen, and or felt is Art but the tag to what kind of art it is or what value the art carries depends on who made the art. Is the artist a professional artist or just one who creates as a hobby? Or one who creates due to circumstances?

Let's know the the creator of the art is and then we know what the title tag is!

#drawing #comment #betterlife

It is not what I meant.

My daughter said before art is born (created) the person has an idea in mind what to create.

Another method is to just do something or call a certain end project art. Like one word to AI and if the result is interesting I call it art.

Or I use this and whatever comes out is art.

20241021_152747.jpg

Yes. Both reasoning are actually valid. Both works fine and it depends on so many things sometimes it could be time, it could the resources available to work with. It could be almost anything.

I enjoyed every bit of the process, the more you involve yourself in daily drawings you get better in different aspect. The tutorial was really helpful can't wait to see more. And please give me some pointers on how i could improve my lines.

I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it. The second lesson/contest started already, you should check it out.
