Weekly Reflections #31: Lessons from my Profession | Photographer | ENG /ESP

Hello to all fellow Steem for Betterlife members.

My name is Xavier Duran and I live on an island in the Balearic archipelago, on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. I have been working professionally in photography for more than thirty years. First as a reporter for several newspapers, and then as a freelance photographer. As such, I have dedicated myself mainly to the editorial and travel sector, and the last 10 years almost exclusively to architectural photography, although related to this I also make aerial reports with a drone.

Mi nombre es Xavier Duran y vivo en una isla del archipiélago Balear, en la costa mediterránea española. Llevo más de treinta años trabajando profesionalmente en la fotografía. Primero como reportero de varios diarios, y después como fotógrafo independiente. Como tal, me he dedicado principalmente al sector editorial y de viajes, y los últimos 10 años casi exclusivamente a la fotografía de arquitectura, aunque relacionado con ésta también realizo reportajes aéreos con un drone.

The contest rules say that I should explain something I have learned in my profession that can be useful to others. Well, if there is one thing that I have learned in my work as a photographer, it is to have patience, and honestly, I believe that without patience we cannot achieve what we set out to do. Patience gives us a sense of seeing the situations that we face, that most likely in a hurry we would not be able to face them with any guarantee of doing well. I think it is really essential to have patience to manage in a world like today's that only thinks about running.

Dicen las normas del concurso que explique algo que haya aprendido en mi profesión que pueda ser útil a los demás. Bueno, si hay alguna cosa que mi trabajo como fotógrafo que he aprendido, es a tener paciencia, y sinceramente, creo que sin paciencia no se puede conseguir aquello que nos proponemos. La paciencia nos da un sentido de ver las situaciones a las que nos enfrentamos, que muy probablemente con prisa no las podríamos afrontar con garantías de hacerlo bien. Pienso que realmente es imprescindible tener paciencia para desenvolvernos en un mundo como el actual que solo piensa en correr.

Finally my advice for those who want to start in photography, apart from having patience, is to focus on composition. Since the renaissance, all great painters have spent years studying composition, the art of how to put objects, volumes and people in a two-dimensional rectangle, is the great challenge of every photographer. No matter what device you use to photograph, you have to study and focus on composing, for this there are thousands of tutorials on the web, or if you want to make better use of your time, you can attend a classroom course that is given in the area where you live. Then, to make a leap in quality and creativity, you have to use a camera and forget the cell phone to take pictures. With a cell phone you can take good pictures, yes, but to advance in the art of photography, you have to know how to look through the viewfinder.

I end my article with a photograph taken early in the morning in downtown Cairo, Egypt. A bread delivery man crossed the street and thanks to my experience in my work as a photojournalist, I had enough agility and speed to capture the moment with a magical light that illuminated the boy on his bicycle.

Por último mi consejo para aquellos que se quieran iniciar en la fotografía, aparte de tener paciencia, es centrarse en la composición. Desde el renacimiento, todos los grandes pintores han pasado años estudiando composición, el arte de cómo poner los objetos, volúmenes y personas en un rectángulo de dos dimensiones, es el gran reto de todo fotógrafo. No importa el aparato que se utilice para fotografiar, hay que estudiar y centrarse en componer, para ello hay miles de tutoriales en la web, o bien si se quiere aprovechar mejor el tiempo, se puede asistir a algún curso presencial que se dé en la zona donde se vive. Después, para dar un salto en la calidad y creatividad, hay que usar una cámara y olvidarse del teléfono móvil para hacer fotos. Con el móvil se pueden hacer buenas fotos, si, pero para avanzar en el arte de la foto, hay que saber mirar por el visor.

Finalizo mi artículo con una fotografía tomada a primera hora de la mañana en el centro del Cairo, Egipto. Un repartidor de pan cruzó la calle y gracias a mi experiencia en mi trabajo como fotoperiodista, tuve la suficiente agilidad y rapidez para captar el momento con una luz mágica que iluminó la chico en su bicicleta.
