Ever heard about this guy called Sisyphus, being punished to roll a stone always escaping him near the top of the hill and rolling down again ?
As it happens, we still undertake this kind of task, sometimes putting great effort but finding out that it is ultimately pointless.
As Sisyphus has been punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness the myth is still alive and very well nourished by our own everyday behaviour.
I hope that the visual that I've made helps a bit to endure the punishment.
"Sisyphus"
art & motion by Werner Hornung
By looking at subjects that refer to Sisyphus, of course the first one that I found was the beetle...especially the one who separates balls of dung from droppings and rolls them over the soil before burying them.
Happily we are at least exempted from this part of the task.
The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
