Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his resignation today due to health problems, Xinhua news agency reported.

Abe said in a press conference that he needed to undergo treatment for an intestinal infection, a disease that caused him to retire for a while in 2007.

He said: "I will undergo treatment for a long period of time."
