Assalamu Alaikum, I hope everyone comes well. Alhamdulillah, I also come well. Today I will talk about the Teesta River, the northernmost river in Bangladesh.
This river came from the neighbouring country of India. It flows through Tepakhori Bari and Khalisha Chapani in Dimla Upazila of Nilphamari district in northern Bangladesh. In the 80s, this river was a curse for humans, but in the evolution of time, it is now a blessing.
During the monsoon season, the uncontrollable water from the mountain streams from India would flood hundreds of villages on the banks of the Teesta. Thousands of baron houses and croplands would be lost under the Teesta River. Many people and animals lost their lives. After the flood, the remaining land would be covered by sand, leaving thousands of hectares of land uncultivated.
People were starving for months and half-starved. At times, the area would turn into a famine. Government and non-governmental organizations provide relief during and after floods. Teesta project work started in the 80s. Teesta barrage was established. Teesta Barrage is partially located in Dimla Upazila of Nilphamari District and the rest in Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat District.
There are a total of 52 swatch gates in the barrage. The gates control the water. There is a large water storage area in front of the barrage. Different cache side channels. This channel is also controlled by a swatch gate. Thousands of hectares of land are cultivated by the waters of side channels.
If the height of the water in front of the barrage is high, there is a place to remove the excess water. As a result of the implementation of the Teesta irrigation project, crop production increases, river erosion decreases, and flood control becomes possible by making transportation easier.
At present, the quality of life of the people of that region have improved a lot and prosperity has returned to every family.
Today so far, we will talk about another auspicious time. Everyone will be fine by the grace of Allah, in this corner.
