Day 860: 5 Minute Freewrite: Thursday - Prompt: barn door

Sitting in the small roadside General Store anxiously awaiting his realtor, Harold Druett was pleased with himself. Why shouldn't he be? Wasn't it he who'd secured the property on the outskirts of town? Harold knew a bargain when he saw one. And he'd stop at nothing to get it. Even if it meant provoking his best friend to disclose the amount of his bid. Shrewd was Harold. And everyone in town knew it.

They also knew about the old McGregor place. That's why they were so happy when Harold proudly bragged he'd won the bid. Oh yes, Harold was on his way to becoming the richest man in Chesterville, everyone laughed.

Why the owners conditioned the sale on his agreeing to (i) replace the barn door, and (ii) never remove or relocate the old barn was a mystery to him. He officially owned the sought-after property with an old decrepit barn. That fact that he couldn't dispose of it as he saw fit irked him as he signed the Sales Contract.

Obscured by the trees, the winding road leading to the property revealed no clue as to the condition of the barn. The freshly manicured yard seemed displaced.

Harold inched closer. Even though exposed for many years, the musty odor was prevalent inside. The barn door was completely shattered. He dared not enter. Rotting and decaying beams underneath old tin culminated to declare the structure unsafe.

Harold cursed to the top of voice his decision to buy, sight unseen, as-is this hideous structure with no door.

With as much strength as he could exert, Jeremy, now understanding the situation and inflamed with the trespasser, propelled himself from the house past Harold. He stood looming in the twilight over the small, weakly frame.

Harold dropped to the floor unresponsive, midway between the barn door.

Hi @seadbeady. LoL. Me too. But a good blog makes it seems as though you are smelling and feeling all the emotions that come with it. Have you done a freewrite before? They are fun to do.

Thanks for taking the the time to stop by and visit. Appreciate your kind words...wait a minute...I think so.

Anyway, have a great day, and rest of the week.

Do I understand correctly that Jeremy is/was old McGregor and Harold dies of fright?

Hi @deirdyweirdy. That's a good thought. Stay tuned for Part 2 to see if smarty-pants, swindling, two-faced, Harold should've listened to the gossip of the townspeople about the goings on at the farm. But he was too busy pulling the rug and double dealing to pay attention.

Let's see what's in store for Mr. Know-It-All. Thanks for taking the time to drop by and support my post. Wow, I'm getting good ideas on what to do with Harold to teach him a lesson about undermining his friends.

Ah, I see. I didn't realise there was another part coming.

Hi. Harold only fell to the ground unconscious. Don't know if he's dead or not.

Oh, I see, I thought it read Harold dropped to the floor lifeless but I see now it actually says unresponsive. My poor old eyes.

Well written story and very exciting @justclickindiva, and great buildup to that ending, he certainly should have listened to the gossip, keep up your great work, it's awesome.

I get the feeling he was set up! Oh BOY!!!

@bdmillergallery. It's a mystery unfolding for Mr. Harold. He's so smart, he missed the warning signs. But that's for the continuation. Great theory being set up. I'll have to take that into consideration. Thanks for dropping in to give me some ideas on what to do with Harold. I appreciate your support.
