A month from today, we celebrate Independence Day. With all the chaos and unrest being exhibited across our nation, I thought it fitting to share my poem, Happy Anniversary America.
Peace be with us all.
Happy Anniversary America
Fireworks, smoke, and noise
It’s the 4th day of July
There’s always a celebration
I’m not sure exactly why
Does America embrace freedom
Is there really justice for all
What’s happened to inalienable rights
Our fathers would be appalled
Is America the steward of democracy
Is that idea a universal joke
Has the persona of invincible eagle
Become an unbearable yoke
Why are so many Americans poor
Barely feeding and clothing their kin
Can anyone come up with answers
Love of money is the worst of all sin
Fireworks in the form of handguns
Smoke in the form of a screen
Noise from the masses for their rights
America is slave to greed
Profits are ruling our country
And the world is following behind
We citizens must clean up this mess
Take charge while there’s still time
We’ve allowed our government complete control
Of our minds as well as our wills
All in the name of patriotism
Bureaucrats with their hands in the tills
Happy Anniversary America
The Declaration was sanctioned today
I pray it won’t bring condemnation
What’s become of the American way
