Crutch. A stick you place under your arm for walking and standing when you are unable to to so on your own. It can be a blessing for someone with a broken leg. They obviously cannot put weight on it, and therefore cannot walk. Until the leg heals, the crutch acts as a convenient tool.
But does the crutch heal the broken leg. Of course not! It's only to be used as long as the leg is injured and unable to perform It's functions.
Hence, the crutch is not a solution. It is only something to help you get by until the leg has healed. So healing the leg, making it strong again is what should be prioritised.
This philosophy applies to more than just fractured limbs.
It applies to the way children are raised, the way we help our friends and family and the way governments run their countries.
A responsible parent is one who strengthen their child's spirit, teaches them resilience and determination. Qualities that will help them overcome life's challenges. They won't be able to do so if parents only provide them with the crutch of coddling and shielding them from hardships.
When our friends and relatives struggle financially, the truly kind and generous thing to do is to help them find a way to support themselves. As opposed to just lending them money indefinitely.
Great leaders are those who empower their people instead of just giving them freebies and subsidies to make their troubles go away.
Coddling, protecting, lending money, subsidies..... these things are important. They serve a vital purpose. But just like the crutch, they are not the solution.
The solution is that which makes the crutch redundant.
