Darning

It was common in my childhood.

It was not different from ironing everything, underpants included, and wearing clothes of your siblings. There wasn't as much waste as there is today. Not among the rich and not among the poor. Today we all turned into big wasters. Our trash cans get bigger and bigger and even their number increases.

A darning basket I can not remember we had one at home. Neither my grandmother's. Sewing machines yes. Sewing baskets yes but no darning baskets. On Friday's it was darning time. My mother insisted on it. Time to save money after she opened the bills. Shouting, yelling, panick. Socks had to be repaired, no money to buy new.
On Saturdays she went shopping. Drove to a boutique 100 kilometres away to buy a few new outfits for herself. Each outfit included shoes, a coat, a scarf, gloves.
At times she skipped the boutiques because the antique hunt started again.

You don't need to darn antiques, there was always money to buy what she liked. She never came back home with a darning basket though. Darning was done upstairs, just like ironing. It was not something to show off with.
