Liver disease cannot be cured simply by studying Sufism (which is one of the goals to purify it from liver disease), especially by studying jurisprudence, kalam, or all other sciences. There is, the higher the knowledge, the more acute his heart disease because he feels he is getting more qualified with it all.
When hearing a verse or hadith about purification of the heart, a person whose heart is dirty will not feel that there is something wrong with him, instead he will collect the verses and hadith as a tool to correct others who he thinks are not as good as himself. All advice and theories are useless for a dirty heart.
Liver disease can only be cured by riyadhah, real action to fight the type of disease suffered, not just by listening to scientific advice and theories. For example:
If the disease of his heart is boasting of wealth, then he must get used to wearing shabby clothes, ugly vehicles, and going to places where many people gather until he is considered poor and treated as poor. If there are still feelings of unwillingness, objection and want to explain that he is actually rich, then it means that the disease is not cured.
If the disease is to boast about knowledge, then you have to get used to appearing like a fool, sitting behind in the place of stupid people who no one listens to, listening to the advice of others who are far more stupid than him and not protesting when his advisor is wrong. If there is still a sense of wanting to show his knowledge, feeling that he is far above the people around him, it means that his illness has not been cured.
If the disease is jealousy and lust for someone, then in order to recover, you must get used to praising the advantages of the person he is jealous of. If necessary give him gifts, appreciation and support so that the person is more successful and surpasses himself. If this cannot be done or done but with pretense and still hurts, then the disease has not been cured.
That's why in the world of Sufism it is emphasized the importance of murshid (spiritual guides) who can prescribe appropriate riyadhah according to the heart disease of each student. Of course finding a murshid is also not easy because he himself must be a person who has gone through a long series of riyadhah. It's easy to just give advice and quote the words of scholars, but it's not enough to make someone a murshid. In front of the right murshid, a student must position himself as a corpse which he does whatever he wants and does not protest against the prescribed riyadhah. If not, of course, liver disease cleansing therapy will not be successful.
Once upon a time there was an educated person with a luxurious and dignified appearance who came to visit a murshid. He intends to study so that he can improve his quality with the guidance of the Murshid. However, the murshid rejected it flatly saying: "You will not be able to become my student". The prospective student insisted on asking to be accepted and guided. Finally the Murshid said: "Okay, then shave your beard, wear tattered clothes, then go to the market with sweets. Then shout there and call the little children and tell them to throw you with pebbles. Who did it, then you give them candy". Hearing that, the dignified prospective disciple felt unprepared. That is a picture of the severity of riyadhah, the real action of cleansing the heart.
Can riyadhah as above be done without the guidance of the murshid? Yes, it's just that the results are less measurable because of the high subjectivity. It's the same as a doctor, if you are sick, you still need the treatment of another doctor, a person who wants to take riyadhah of cleansing the heart ideally still needs the views of others, even though he himself already knows all the theories.
