I went out on the road alone. A way to meet myself, no one else. When I heard the news of the Frieze & Kiaf International Art Fair being held at COEX in Samseong-dong, I wanted to run right away. However, I could only go on the last day of the event. The Frieze Art Fair ended the day before, so I could see only the Kiaf Art Fair, which started with the purpose of promoting Korean contemporary art internationally. To my surprise, the KIAF started in 2002, a year earlier than Frieze, which started in London in 2003. Frieze has been held at Regent’s Park in London every October for the past 20 years. It extended to New York from 2012, to Los Angeles in 2021, and to Seoul in 2022. Amazed to see that Seoul, my birthplace, has become shoulder to shoulder with London, New York, and LA, I wanted to compare the two international art fairs.
While heading towards COEX after getting off at Samseong metro station, I was bewildered by the changes in the scenery. At a hotel near COEX, I got married in 1996. Now there are newer, bigger and taller buildings, harmonized with the well-designed landscaping and sculptures along the widened street. On the way to COEX, my eyes caught the cobalt-colored pillar at the entrance of Starfield mall. Besides today’s art fair, it was a billboard (?) of the Byeolmadang (meaning garden with stars) Library, my other destination today. The pillar displayed poems written by two of Koreans’ favorite poets, Ra Tae Joo and Lee Hae-in.
홀로 길을 나섰다. 누군가가 아닌 나 자신을 만나기 위한 길. 삼성동 코엑스에서 열리고 있다는 프리즈(Frieze) & 키아프 (Kiaf) 국제 아트페어 소식을 듣고 단번에 달려가고 싶었지만, 행사 마지막 날에야 갈 수 있었다. 프리즈 아트페어는 전날 마쳤고, 한국의 현대미술을 국제적으로 알리려는 취지로 시작된 키아프 아트페어만 하루 더 진행되어 키아프 전시만 볼 수 있었다. 놀랍게도 2002년에 시작된 한국의 국제아트페어 키아프가 런던에서 2003년에 시작된 프리즈보다 한 살 위였다. 프리즈는 지난 20년간 매년 10월 런던의 리젠츠 파크(Regent's Park)에서 열리고 2012년부터는 미국 뉴욕에서 2021년엔 LA에서 열렸고 2022년에 서울에도 확장한 것이다. 내가 태어나 자란 도시, 서울이 런던, 뉴욕, LA와 같은 국제도시와 어깨를 겨누는 도시가 되었다는 것이 놀라워 꼭 두 아트페어를 비교하며 보고 싶었다.
삼성역에서 내려 코엑스 방향으로 나서니 사뭇 달라진 풍경에 어리둥절해 서 있었다. 삼성역 근처 호텔에서 1996년에 결혼을 할 당시보다 훨씬 더 높고, 크고 새로운 빌딩들이 들어서 있고 넓은 길가를 따라 조경과 조각 등 세련미를 뽐내고 있었다. 코엑스 방향으로 가는 길에 Starfield mall 입구 코발트색 기둥에 눈길이 멈췄다. 오늘 아트페어 외에 나의 또다른 목적지인 별마당도서관의 광고판(?)이었다. 한국인이 가장 좋아하는 두 시인, 나태주와 이해인의 시가 적힌 기둥이었다.

Upon entering the KIAF Seoul, I noticed Nam June Paik’s video art and Roman Ondak’s performance art Clockwork. As 164 galleries from 17 countries joined this event, all kinds of contemporary art were on display. Each work revealed each artist’s own world. In a life that comes and goes like dust in vast time and space, I think an artist is the one who finds her or his identity. Pop artist Sangyoon Han expresses life through happy pigs. Kwak Seung-yong, who paints a series of famous western women dressed in hanbok, is said to find his way after being asked when he was studying in France, ‘Why do Asians draw Western things?’. His artworks seemed to ask me, “Why are you writing in Korean in America?” or “Why does a stranger like you who can’t speak English well write in English?”
17개국 164개 갤러리 참가했다는 키아프 서울 행사장 안에 들어서니 백남준의 비디오 아트, 로만 온닥의 퍼포먼스 예술인 클락워크부터 온갖 현대미술이 전시돼 있었다. 각 작품마다 각 작가의 세계를 담고 있다. 광활한 시간과 공간 속에 티끌처럼 왔다 가는 인생. 그 속에서 자신만의 세상을 찾은 이가 예술가라 생각한다. 팝아티스트 한상윤 (HAN,Sangyoon)은 행복한 돼지를 통해 삶을 표현하고, 유명한 서양여인화에 한복을 입힌 연작을 그리는 곽승용 화가는 프랑스 유학 시절 ‘동양인이 왜 서양의 것을 그리는가’라는 질문에 서양여인에 한복을 입힌 그림을 그리기 시작했다 한다. 미국에서 한글로 글을 쓰는 내게 “왜 미국에서 한글로 글을 쓰는가?”고, 혹은 “영어도 제대로 못하는 이방인이 왜 영어로 글을 쓰느냐?”고 내게 묻는 듯했다.
Being exhausted after exploring the art fair for a few hours, I had lunch at a restaurant in Starfield mall and headed to the Byeolmadang Library. The bookcase, 13 meters high, appeared like a tower, and the transparent ceiling, like the Louvre’s, filled the bookstore with sunlight. Out of the newly published books displayed near the entrance, I picked Tae Won-jun’s “Wish To Be Ordinary Even Only One Day”, sat on a sofa to read it. After finishing the book, I had to rush to go home before the sunset.
몇 시간동안 전시를 둘러본 후 기진맥진해 나와 Starfield mall에 있는 한 식당에서 점심을 먹고 별마당 도서관으로 향했다. 13미터에 달하는 2층에 걸친 책장이 타워처럼 서 있고 천정은 루브르 박물관의 천정처럼 하늘을 볼 수 있게 설계되어 햇살이 가득한 도서 책방은 사람들로 가득했다. 나는 신간 도서코너에 전시된 태원준 작가의 “딱 하루만 평범했으면”을 골라 소파에 앉아 읽은 후 해가 지기 전 집에 돌아가기 위해 발걸음을 재촉했다.
