Myoglobin is an iron containing, oxygen carrier molecule. It is present in skeletal and cardiac muscle. This molecule gives thte characteristic red color to meat. Myoglobin is toxic to the renal epithelium of the tubules. When rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) occurs, there is risk of the myoglobin causing pigment nephtopathy
