There have been a few conversations with friends who have asked for show recommendations that faltered as I realized many of the jokes and references were from other episodes in the series. It's hard to tell people, "Just start at season 1, episode 1 because season 5 episode 20 is amazing!"
One other casualty of COVID this year is fresh content. Some things finished in time but many of the new shows and movies released this year were sitting on a shelf with no release date planned. But if something has to come out, better drop a D-list film than nothing.
In this new version of existence, I prefer to watch things I can deeply invest in. I've been going back to series that I've watched before and have looked for new ones that go deep and carry me through a cohesive story. Here's some of what I've seen and I'm interested in what I may be missing:
West Wing. It still holds up. If anything, I wish I were in that world. It's been such an intense year politically (all over the world) that no matter where you live, it's nice to dive into an alternate world that feels familiar.
Doctor Who. Recently I rewatched a season that included my favorite character but it made me want to start (the reboot) over again. By the time I get back to that season I'll probably rewatch it again. This is a show that I have to selectively recommend. There are a few stand-alone episodes I can share with people but really want them to dive in (even though it looks cheap).
Downton Abbey. A partner of mine is finishing it and so I jumped in for season 5 but wish I could start at the beginning. I can't wait for her to see the movie. Speaking of 6 seasons and a movie...
Community. It starts like a normal sitcom and goes delightfully off the rails by the end of the first season. So many great references to itself, other films, other tv shows, and more. I love this show and recommend it often.
The Handmaids Tale. That same partner was on season 2. I jumped in with her and we just finished season 3 and now she's reading the book. It's great, especially the 3rd season but it's intense. After an episode or two we'd have to switch to...
Big Mouth. Funny, gross, educational, what more could you want? I wish I had this show when I was in middle school. I'm not sure if I'd understand it then but wow; So much great content and so funny.
There are tons more great shows out there but these came to mind first. I hope you're all staying safe and enjoying your streams. :)
Breaking Bad???? (I love Community)
