Review: Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel dates back to a time when the MCU had never traveled, Earth is in the midst of a galactic war between two races. In a Kree war, Carol Danvers undertakes a mission to end the threat from the Skrulls. But when she makes contact with humanity, she begins to doubt the reality that surrounds her, while she will discover who she is and fight to become one of the heroines of the universe.

This film is introductory, and you have to keep that in mind. TheMCU already had a very powerful streak with its movies. This film returns to the origins of the universe and recalls those where the objective was to present a character in this entire universe of films. There are positives here as well as negatives, as it's always nice to see someone new, but it's hard to assimilate that this comes in tandem with lower power output.

And that on the one hand is fine, because specifically the film fulfills one of its objectives when it focuses on a much more earthly plot. Carol Danvers discovers things about herself on par with the viewer, since the intention is that we all understand what is happening. Directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden have done an excellent job dedicating fully human scenes and situations, which stay away from science fiction elements. In addition, the environment that is used makes good use of all its resources, adding a lot of retro references for those who are already older.

But all this would be meaningless without the central axis of the story. Carol Danvers is well structured and manages to show us a certain charm when she shows her human personality. The script as always does a good job, providing natural dialogue and Danvers' evolution from being a soldier to a heroine. Captain Marvel goes from being a Kree war that is capable of dealing with his memories and feelings, to a powerful woman who only needs to release everything inside her to demonstrate her true power. The role of women is of great importance in this film, but it does so without the typical stereotypes and speeches that are sometimes forced into many films. On the contrary, it is the facts that really speak more than the words themselves.

Behind every hero is a great person. In this case Captain Marvel is endorsed by Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning actress who doesn't have a great costume. Her performance is on par with her powers, while she knows how to embrace the features of a war and the innocence of a young woman who is discovering herself. Completely to perfection all the cast that I use in this movie, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law and a Ben Mendelsohn who excel in their performances.

But, always remember that not everything is good in a movie. The limitations of the story and its intentions deprive us of the action with powerful scenes, characteristic of Marvel, in three-quarters of the film, something that could collide with the most loyal fans of the films in this cinematic universe. That he doesn't have a villain is another negative point, but it is somewhat justified, since it is the introduction of a character who plans to go much further after participating in Endgame. The film does not escape all those resources that are so abundant and that are so classic in Disney's Marvel movie. Knowing when to put a joke on the perfect scenes to be remains a mystery in studio productions.

Captain Marvel is a good introductory movie with all the good and bad that comes with these types of productions. The good thing, it becomes like those first movies where presenting a new character was the main attraction of the story. The bad thing is that it takes away space from the action scenes and the great villains that are presented together with the hero.

Beyond this, and although the film cannot escape all the resources that Diney's direction entails in Marvel productions, what really manages to prevail is Carol Danvers herself. Captain Marvel is perhaps one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And not only because of the powers it has, but it is one of those few that presents more humanity in itself. But well that was my opinion, and if you want to share yours leave it in the comments.
