After understanding the course material, explain why teachers need to be examples and role models for students, and how much influence does this have on student behavior and character? |
---|
Everybody is a teacher. Being a parent makes us teachers to our children, and having a younger sibling automatically makes us a teacher to them; some other factors also make us teachers.
Nevertheless, classroom teaching is a noble profession, perhaps a calling that involves transferring knowledge, mentoring, inculcating discipline, and knowing the mental disposition of students, and the method or approach that best suits each student at the time.
It has to do with character modeling, impartation, talent and skill harnessing, career guidance, and personality building. Consequently, there are many reasons why teachers need to be examples and role models for students, as well as how much influence it may have on student behavior and character. However, I will highlight a few of them.
Long-term impact
A teacher's influence as a role model goes beyond the class and is observed to have a diuturnal effect on the lives of students. It is very obvious that the behaviors and values students learn from their teachers they also carry into their individual as well as professional lives.
Influence on the behavior of students
Students usually copy their teacher's attitudes, patterns, and behavior. Any time teachers display positive behavior like empathy, respect, and kindness, students tend to adopt the traits.
Building respect and trust
Any time positive values and behavior are displayed by teachers, they command respect and trust from their students. This results in an encouraging learning environment.
Development of character
By showing honesty, integrity, and responsibility, teachers shape the characters and moral values of students which enables the students to cultivate requisite life values and skills.
Talking about how much influence this has on student behavior and character, I would like to mention that students spend an average of 10 hours per day (7:00 - 17:00) in school with their teachers and d spend about 4 hours with parents or family before retiring to their rooms.
It gives us an average of 50 hours per working week; it is therefore evident that students spend more time with their teachers than with their parents and hence, are practically subject to their teachers' influence.
We may have noticed that sometimes, when we as parents correct our child over what we perceive as erroneous, the child opposes the correction, saying, "That's not what my teacher taught me". This is a piece of evidence that they are learning from their teacher.
Consequently,
Students who were opportune to have teachers who displayed positive behavior and values had greater-than-even chances of demonstrating positive conduct themselves.
The engagement, motivation, as well as academic involvement of students can be greatly influenced by the teacher's behavior.
Where students have a positive relationship with their teachers, it results in the students having greater chances of developing interest and positive disposition to the teacher's course or subject as well as school and learning.
Each teacher has a different character and personality, name as many negative behaviors that you are aware of in yourself while teaching. |

Classroom teaching is a time-consuming, energy-sapping job. It is usually annoying when a fast is teaching a slow learner. I am naturally a fast learner and get annoyed each time a student lags in comprehending a lesson. Sometimes I yell or call names, though not abusive names, but whichever the case may be, it is a negative behavior because it demoralizes the student.
Frowning at students or a student when they fall below expectations without any form of appraisal for their little effort is another negative behavior I display in my teaching. This also has a way of hurting students.
Sometimes, I give a countenance or facial expression that shows disappointment, and this hurts students and impairs learning. Not showing concern, compassion, or understanding toward students, giving an attitude that portrays a lack of empathy.
Sometimes these behaviors are intentional, and sometimes they are not, but whether intentional or not, they are negative behaviors and can give rise to a noxious learning environment, harm the relationship between the teacher and the student as well and frustrate academic accomplishment.
Share with us examples of positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors that you have implemented in your daily life with students. What educational values are contained in these behaviors. |

Self-evaluation using the SWOT analysis was very helpful to me, enabling me to tackle and overcome my negative behavioral attitudes displayed towards my students, including the above-mentioned negative behaviors.
I have learned and implemented several positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors in my daily life with students which is also of great academic value.
1. Empathy and tenderheartedness
This is the first value or behavioral attitude I implemented in my daily life: to always and constantly put myself in the shoes of my students. Showing interest in their feelings and overall well-being has constantly helped me control negative expressions and displays. The educational value is nothing less than empathy and compassion.
2. Healthy relationship
When teachers maintain positive relationships with students, it positively influences their attitude towards learning, school, and the course or subject taught by the teacher. Keeping a healthy relationship with my students brings them closer to me and builds trust, rapport, and confidence. Hence, they confide in me and feel free to express their individual problems in anticipation of getting guidance and support. This fosters collaboration and community.
3. Sentimental intelligence
It has become a routine to take notes, understand, and put to check my emotions as well as those of students. This is helping me with emotion maintenance and management. Emotional intelligence and well-being are the values attached to this.
4. Sensitivity to culture
Different people, different backgrounds, different cultures. Being sensitive to culture has greatly helped me in respecting and placing values on cultural differences as well as inclusivity promotion and properly handling cultural biases. Cultural sensitivity and awareness are the values contained in this behavior.
What benefits do you feel from the exemplary behavior you have shown so far, has it had a positive impact on the behavior and character of your students? |

Yes, there are numerous positive impacts it has had on my students.
By observing my behavior as their teacher, they have learned, by example, worthy life skills like empathy, respect, as well as responsibility. Also, they are showing enthusiasm for learning due to my healthy relationship with them.
My demonstration of concern and care for their well-being offers them a sense of belonging, also making them feel supported and esteemed. In addition, interacting with them has equally helped them to cultivate requisite social skills like teamwork, communication, as well as conflict resolution.
They are inspired by my display of positive behavior to become improved citizens, scholars, as well as persons.
