SEC | S19W5 | Effect of Digital Classrooms on our Educational System

Digital classrooms are very essential in our educational system especially when the nation is going through hard times such as pandemics, war, and other social and economic vises. When a country or a nation is hit by these things, the nation or country shouldn't stop learning or teaching because of these issues and that is why the need for a digital classroom is very important.

Recently, from one of the assignments, we noticed that there are countries where students have to take turns coming to school because of the unavailability of infrastructure such as classrooms, and a shortage of manpower. These issues and more are the main reasons why digital classrooms are important in our education.

Before a digital classroom will be effective around the world, some things must be put in place, and below we will look at a few of these things that just have to be in place.

Digital Devices: Both students and teachers must have digital devices such as smartphones, computers, and other related devices and the Internet age since it is a classroom, and students can join from anywhere which has solved the issues of infrastructure and crowded classrooms.

Electronic Boards: Since the teacher will be in a place different from the students, the a need for electronic boards so that all examples and class work can be visible to all students. One beautiful thing about this is that you have the opportunity to see the board clearly as this wouldn't have been possible if it is a physical meeting where your seat falls at the back.

Collaborative Tools: To effectively participate in this classroom, students and teachers must make use of platforms like Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and many other devices which give us access to such futures and will allow us to effectively have teachers and students interaction.

Benefits and challenges

Everything that has a benefit also has a challenge and digital classrooms are no exception. So below are a few of the benefits and challenges associated with digital classrooms.

Benefits

• Accessibility, just as stated above, there are places where there is a shortage of manpower and infrastructure which makes students take turns to go to school and it is not always easy for teachers to repeat the same teaching to different groups. With digital classrooms, teachers and students can have the class once and for all.

• Engagement is another benefit associated with digital classrooms because when you have such classes people get to meet their selves and interact and share good knowledge. People from different parts can attend that school because there are no limitations for students once they are registered.

Challenges

• Technical know-how, using such a medium to learn and teach will require training and teaching for both the staff and the students. We have seen situations where teachers find it difficult to operate some devices so they will need training on how to use the devices.

• Technology Issues such as accessing these devices, the internet, and many more are some of the key challenges that are faced by digital classrooms.
