Children are a gift from God and hence, it is expedient that they are celebrated. This day is a day set aside to celebrate the importance of children in society. Children’s day is celebrated on different days in various countries but here in Nigeria, our children’s day is the 27th day of May. On this day, children are given holidays and a lot of social activities are done. Some children converge at stadiums and fields to engage in march pasts and other extracurricular activities while others are given a treat to children parties and what have you. Some state governments honor outstanding children by making them governors for one day. It helps build the morale of the child and encourages him/her and others to be better. It is celebrated to promote a mutual understanding among children and to take actions that would be beneficial to the wellbeing of children.

This special day was introduced in 1857 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard. Dr. Charles was a pastor of the universalist church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts. At first, he called it Rose Sunday but later changed it to Flower Sunday and finally children's day. It was first announced as a national holiday in Turkey in 1920.

Most of us have children that are related to us in one way or the other. Can you tell us what you have learned from the children who are close to you? At least 3 things learned from a child.

I have learned quite some attributes from children and they include;

Trust

Children are one of the best sets of people to learn trust from. They give their sole will to their parents and guardians with the hope that they can take good care of them. Take, for instance, you can hold a child’s hand and cross a very busy road and he trusts you to take him to the other part of the road safe and unhurt. This attribute from children helps me trust more in the supremacy of God.

Forgiveness

I once beat my younger brother because he misbehaved and he cried bitterly and after some time, I went back to pet him and he started playing with me again forgetting that I had beat him up earlier. He had clearly forgiven me and this is very common amongst children. Personally, I learned how to be more forgiving from my brother…the way he forgives us when we discipline him for not acting right always amazes me. One minute he’s angry with you and crying and the next minute he is all over your body talking and playing.

Cheerfulness

Children are the most cheerful people. One would say it’s because they are not thinking about anything or have no responsibilities but I think that is not the case. They hardly are gloomy and always wear a bright countenance no matter what the situation may be…a child may lose a very valuable object and cry over it and after some time, he has gotten over it and is smiling and giggling. From children, especially my younger brother, I have learned to be cheerful and not let my situation affect my countenance no matter how bad things may be.

For this special day, what do you think would be the best gift given to a kid that will make him/her feel loved. Tell us!

My younger brother having some ice cream

Children love a lot of things from toys to goodies bags to snacks, desserts, and ice cream. I think there is no such thing as the best gift for every child because children love things differently. It is all about knowing what makes the child happy. But this special day, I think whatever gift given to a child must something edible in it. A wise man once said that no matter how many gifts you give to a child, they still expect to see something they can put in their mouth and munch on. Using my brother as an example, you can give him a lot of gifts and he would appreciate it and readily share it with others but once you buy him ice cream, he won’t share it will anybody not even you that bought it. This simply means that ice cream is one of his favorite gifts and that definitely makes him feel super loved. So, to buttress more on it, the best gift to a child on children’s day should include an edible item.
Well, since we are still in the spirits of the children's day celebration, any prize from this contest will be used to purchase gifts for my younger brother and other children around me.
