Introduction.

Nursing can be defined as a process by which a patient is helped by to recover from an illness or injury or to regain as much independence as possible. This is more than checking the pulse, and the blood pressure. The nurse plays an important role in the patient's recovery. Very good nurses are more concerned with the patient's overall reaction to the disorder than with the disorder itself, and are devoted to the control of physical pain, the relief of mental suffering and when possible the avoidance of complications.More so, the nurse offers understanding care which involved listening with patience to anxieties and fears and providing emotional support and comfort. When a patient is dying the nurse's role is to help the patient meet death with as little distress and as much dignity as possible. From all these, it is evident that nurses carry a tapestry of care, knowledge and trust that is critical to patient's survival.

Who is a Nurse?

A nurse can be defined as a person who take care of patient in the hospital and also carries out the doctor's prescription. A nurse can also be defined as a person who nourishes, fosters and protects.

    Nurses acts as a public relation officers of the hospital they work. As the first to be seen as one enters the hospital, her attitude towards patient portrays the hospital either in good light or in bad light. If her behaviour towards the is good, such patients will not only come back when they are sick but will also speak good of the hospital to other prospective patients. This will boost the image of the hospital within the community where is situated. On the other hand, if the nurses behave unruly to the patients, the image of such a hospital is at stake and if something is not done, the hospital risks folding up. It is true patients observe the behaviour of all nurses in the hospital and on several occasions make bold to discuss same with the doctor in charge.

Problems Facing Nurses On The Job.

More nurses are likely to be attacked at work place than prison guards or police offices as 70% of nurses don't feel safe from assult. More offten, the problem comes from the patients who are on drugs or who have been drinking or who are under stress or who are affected by grief.
They have to contend with burn out caused by stress. Shortages of staff is one other factor. Many hospitals are under staffed. The need to safe money by these hospitals has been given as reason for this shortage. Death of patients can have a depressing effect on nurses.

Nursing is an everlasting profession. As long as humanity exist, there will always be a need for carring and compassion. No matter the growth and infullence of technology, no machine can ever replace a nurse's touch and compassion. Without the nurses, it would have been certainly less pleasant if not impossible to stay in hospitals.
