Since I already talked about Depression in my last post, I don't need to say much about it but I will leave the link to the post at the end of this one. So there are popularly two ways in treating Psychological disorders and these are;
- Medications (Anti-depressants, Anti-psychotics e.t.c)
- Psychotherapy
Medications - The use of medication prescribed by professional doctors is a good way of treating and managing mental disorders and it has shown positive results over the years and different lots of drugs have been produced from different research over the years, we have different types like the ;
Anti-depressants - These type of drugs helps in improving the person's symptoms and living a free live without suffering from the symptoms of depression that I mentioned earlier in my previous post.
Anti-psychotics - These types of drug also helps to reduce symptoms of psychotic disorders like Schizophrenia so that the person can live a good social life.
There are different other types of drugs for different diagnosis, so it is best that these drugs are taken following doctors prescription.
Like anyother types of drugs, these types of drugs has it own side effects and drawdowns because they are not perfect. These types of drugs cannot fully or permanently cure psychological disorders but rather help in suppressing it's symptoms, that is why it is mostly said that psychological disorders can only be managed and cannot be fully cured.
Apart from them not been able to permanently cure, they also have side effects like drownsiness, fatigue, tiredness when they are taking, so it is best to follow doctor's prescription.
Since we have talked about the Medication aspect let us look at the Psychotherapy aspect.
Psychotherapy is a type of treatment method that involves a patient talking to a psychiatrist or psychologist to learn about their condition and how to mange them by learning to control, and fight it psychologically since the disorder is psychological without taking any drugs.
- There are different types of therapy, we have the individual, couple, children, cognitive, behavioral therapy. The interesting part is that someone don't have to be suffering from psychological disorders before you visit a therapist, infact it is good for an individual to have a personal therapist they visit like 3 times a year, especially in a country like Nigeria where things are really tough, and these difficulties and challenges all take a toil on our mental health, so it is good to take time to check up on our mental health.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The advantages of therapy is so wide because it is involves a one on one interactive session that will help an individual heal faster, some people all they need is someone they can talk to and that will understand them.
Yes everything on earth as it Disadvantages, but the most pressing disadvantage I see in therapy is falling into the wrong hands, some therapist might use the vulnerability of a patient to manipulate and control them, so that is why it's good to get a qualified therapist one can trust.
Well that is mostly it, I wouldn't want to bore us with much talk, but in my own opinion I feel combining the two treatment is actually the best, taking the medications rightly and also being dedicated to the therapy session because therapy can't work without an open heart.
