2 full years of STEEM financial data reveals impossibility of earning crypto by posting quality content

in hive-167922 •  4 years ago

Welcome to the 104th (and final) weekly installment of my series on Steem income and growth!

Income on this blockchain is generated by "investment" (the more currency you have, the more you earn) and by "work" (earning currency by contributing content that adds value). I've been trying to work to earn STEEM by creating (and curating) valuable unique content.

Calculating weekly income

Here's the running tally, including my wife @MediKatie and our joint account @GirlsofGreen:

Average weekly growth (last 10 weeks): +36.8 Steem (+1.16%)

It wasn't a great week, as the economic mess has everybody running for the hills. Upvotes were way down, and my posting was a little decreased as well. @GirlsofGreen has been fairly inactive, as the models aren't feeling very positive or motivated lately. @MediKatie is doing her best to take care of the baby, and get the house ready for possible quarantine and martial law.

The 10-week running average of growth slowed to just over 1% weekly, pretty much an average throughout my 2 years of recording these data.

Charting my SP over time yields this image:

As you can see, it has been a steady grind up. That jump about 9 months ago was my trial with 3Speak, which I've since abandoned because it was expensive, glitchy, and limited to the Steem blockchain. Nowadays I upload videos to LBRY and other free decentralized platforms that work properly.

Also note that I didn't spend any of my STEEM, didn't power down, etc. I created content (posts and comments) full time, and powered up all the payouts I ever got 100%. Only now am I powering down - to pay out funds to my [MAP] project, and to finally escape from this blockchain with what little I have left.

You see, I arrived with 0.2 BTC, at the time worth nearly $5000 USD. I created content for a while, before realizing that without any Steem Power, I was never going to get anywhere here. So I converted my BTC into STEEM, powered it up, and never looked back! (Soon after that, I began keeping these weekly data.)

That $5000 investment, with all the proceeds of my hard work (and that of my wife and a few models that volunteer for us) for almost 3 years now amounts to just $474. Put another way, we paid about $4500 to work full-time here for 3 years. Our team paid $1500 per year to contribute to this blockchain.

"Your voice is worth something!"

How amazing this place was, years ago! I was so excited, thrilled, overjoyed to be here! Innovative, powerful, and supposedly decentralized. And we can earn cryptocurrency?! It was exactly what I had hope for, for so long!

It's not like I haven't given it my all. I've put a few hours a day, at least 360 days a year, into making this blockchain a better place. I started projects, I joined groups, I created my own crypto, and of course, I kept data on my income the whole way through.

Results are in! Hard work, skill, sacrifice, and luck combined aren't enough to turn a profit with 2 people working daily - even if you inject 5 grand of your own money to pump things up. In fact, you'll lose 99% of your initial investment, if not more.

So, is my voice worth something here? Of course it isn't. I've had to PAY just to be here. "Pathetic and disappointing" doesn't even begin to cover it. Tragic. Devastating. Brutal.

This is my final post in this series. I'm powering everything down and moving whatever is left to a currency that isn't going to zero. I should have done that 3 years ago. In fact, I should never have invested anything here at all.

In my time here, Steem has fallen from the #7 crypto to the #70 crypo. It has fallen during the bull markets, and it has fallen during the bear markets. Steem has done nothing but steadily go down for the past 3 years straight. It's hard to be certain this is the bottom.

In hindsight, Steem was a financial mistake. We didn't know that at the time, but we know it now. If we continue here, we're doing so knowing there's no point to it.

Meanwhile, my reputation has hit 68.5 and I'm the 1640th most reputable Steemian. I'm sure my parents would be proud. I made it. You love me! You really love me.

Good luck everybody.

Well, I'd say it has been great, but it kind of hasn't.
The content here is top notch, but the way things work didn't, um, work.

Welcome to the Club, I can understand this not worth the effort. I just zone out of the earnings and continue to post and or curate more for my friends and special people here than the income. I simply don't have the time and energy to go full time posting daily here to begin with having so many demands on my time.

Perhaps if you were actually compensated properly for your work here, you'd be willing to put more effort in? You're probably being paid for something else you're doing in your life (I assume). Do you enjoy that more than you enjoy posting and curating friends and special people?

GSR is like 115:1 right now, but I hear that physical silver supply has pretty much dried up everywhere. Did you happen to pull the trigger on an exchange?

Oh yes, I did dip into my Emergency reserve Fund and pulled the trigger at $13.04 USD spot at 3:15pm just after the Sub$12 bounce at the VCBE Downtown as they still had Inventory. Their other outlets were sold out.

You did it!
Legendary.
And potentially lifechanging. Congratulations and as always the best of luck :)

My other Cash jobs pay better and the cash goes into Precious metals and a monthly Dinner out or Order In meal. I rather not do these extra jobs and spend more time at home for my kids and sister.
A necessary evil as my regular Nurse Job barely covers the bills.
All things being equal, I'd rather write and curate on Steem more and I'd be home too.
For now, with the added demands of Steem I've sacrifice too many valuable sleep hours to it already. I've stopped Commuting by bike as I had an accident enduring a broken shoulder caused by chronic over-fatigue.

@drutter I'm now treating Steem like another social media site. Usual to get some info from, but not as income generation.

But I get what you mean about the countless hours spent here. )':

The other day I was watching a youtube video, I think it was the dollar vigilante. He said he made 30 grand on his first post. It got me thinking, I have been here for 2 years, and trying to be the best Steemian i could be, and I have lost money, not to mention time. I fell you bro. I will be powering down as well on my personal account. Will i leave? Don't think so. But I am down investing money into this place.

Im happy i never invested any of my own money here on steem but I have put a shit ton of money in other cryptos that also got destroyed over the past 2 years and can't ever seem to get back to where i bought in.

As far as steemit/steem goes, I am still doing the same as you, powering down and leaving the platfomr, cuz its definitely not worth my time. Nearly 3 years of work to walk away with $400?? Thats ridiculously stupid! I put way to much time and energy into this to end up make less than $0.5 USD a post.. LMAO! (I only laugh so I don't cry).. I love looking thru my feed and seeing how many $10 posts I made that ultimately end up being worthless. It's disheartening to say the very least. I wish you the best friend. Take care.

Completely hear you on the $10 posts (which took a day or more to create) that ended up going to pennies. And the posts that ended for pennies which went to absolute zero. Millions of blockchain actions, 3 years, $400.

Most of us are in the same boat.

Wow. Dang. The numbers.dont lie. I'm in a similar boat. I'm powering down and buying XRP actually. Say what you want about it. It's a top coin with some use case and it's about par with steem right now.

I invested $500 in August of 2016 about .8 BTC. I never played the Steem Witness Mafia game and I never kissed asses. My family still netted enough to live off of for two years because we sold all the way up and up until November 2019.. Now I focus my time on Appics and LBRY. .2 BTC at $4k was on the day of the ATH in December 2018. Steem has big problems but you lost because you never sold or it could be that Steem moons again and your story will change to, "OMG, I held through the Bear market and my Steem are now worth 5 BTC at $100k each".

Just remember to buy high and sell low and then complain. ; )

You are new here which explains why what you said doesn't make sense.
Everything said here can be verified both by the blockchain itself, and hundreds of supporters/followers who have been here all along.
Now you've got me complaining about a complainer complaining about a complaint. Ugh.

Your are telling Hilarski that he is new here...lol

Hmm... So you arbitrary see your content as high quality. OK. But was there demand for it? Did people want to read it? I see it was mostly about cannabis anyway.

I think that the idea of "I'm going to be rich on steem" is bad approach. As the slogan says - you stay for the people. Do you think you would earn more if you would write on reddit? Steem is not different than any other platform - you need to market yourself, you need to be good at it and people have to enjoy your content to follow you.

Who said I wanted to get rich on Steem? Putting words into people's mouths is the wrong way to start a discussion.

These 104 posts have been about documenting my income and growth. Is my content valuable? Maybe not, depends who you ask. But I've proved that it's not worth anything here. My voice isn't worth something here, and that has been proved without any shadow of a doubt, despite your confusion and logical fallacies.

I value your content.
