Telling My Story : A Day at the Fish Market |

Designed with Canva
Sometimes I buy fish from the Narayanganj Fish Market with my husband. I like to see various kinds of fish and purchase them. Today, I’m going to tell several stories I’ve gotten acquainted with from this market.
The fish market in Narayanganj becomes active at the morning time . Apart from selling fish, there are persons who will cut & clean the fish for you at a small additional charge. In the morning, I went to the market looking for some good fish.
This market is the biggest fish market of Narayanganj. It offer fresh local fish, river fish and sea fish. All types of fish are provided. In morning, the market is too congested with people.
When I walked into the market I felt the stench of fresh fish from one corner. All categories of fishes such as rui, katla, shrimp and hilsa were classified according to their sizes. The consumers and suppliers were engaged in bargaining. I found out that buying fish is not easy. I wanted to know how much the fish actually cost when I spoke to one seller. I found out that you need some tricks to buy good fish.
I started to check the fish with my hands. I didn’t just do what the seller said, but I looked closely. Is the fish’s eye bright? To see if fish is fresh or not, if the eyes are dull, the fish is not fresh. I checked the scales on the fish too. When I felt a fish was fresh I bought big rui, katla and shrimp . I also got local fish that I love.
The best part came after that when I actually bought the fish. When I bought them, I saw a couple people sat down one side with wet hands and clothes, knives and scales. “Would you like us to cut your fish, sister?” they asked.
I would give my fish to one person to cut for a small fee. He started his work. He carefully took out the scales, sliced the fish and washed all the innards away. I was quite surprised to discover that this job involves a lot of skill. They make a little of money but he uses that to support his family.
Observing him I realized that it was not a mere business to him where he earns his wages but it was an element of life. He guide new clients on how to select fish. He was a very professional but at the same time friendly. He said, “Sister, if it smells bad, don’t buy it.” If the eyes are dull don’t buy the fish. I got some actionable knowledge from him that was quite effective.
When the fish were cut as I took the fish in a bag and left the market, I realized that today’s purchase wasn’t just about buying fish. Each person who cut fish, each struggle of the vendors, painted a living picture. In addition to cutting our fish, they taught us lessons for life.
Moral : Before go through fish market it is useful to remember some rules of choosing good fish. General appearance or condition of fish also matters, good fish should have bright eyes, tightly fitting scales, and should not smell. We should also thank the hard work of the people who help buyers like us for very small fee.
