Introduction

Oxygen. Immediately I saw this word, I quickly remembered the facial looks of my Chemistry subject teacher in high school, Mr Edwin. It was in my Chemistry subject I got to mention oxygen and also knew what it was all about. If you may know, Chemistry was one of my best subjects in high school. Although I didn't get to study sciences, I diverted to art because of trouble getting through Physics.

Back to the word chemistry. Still, with the knowledge of my Chemistry class, I understand that oxygen is a chemical element. It has the symbol of 'O' and 'O2' as its formula. Lastly, oxygen is gaseous in nature and has no form or shape. It is used in different manufacturing industries for use and in the production of different items. This is a little reminder, taking you back to your Chemistry class.

The Essence

Nevertheless, the main essence of this post is to talk about the use of oxygen as a life support. You understand that we breathe in oxygen to live and then breathe out carbon dioxide. And so, the oxygen (the air) we breathe freely is provided for us by the maker (God). But as a life support, oxygen is a must-have in clinics and hospitals and any medical outfit.

A patient with a failing system is aided through a ventilator, a life support machine which helps to push oxygen into the lungs through a pipe.

Instances of Oxygen in Use

Oxygen reminds me of the first time I became a mother. My son was admitted into the nursery two days after I gave birth to him. Still at the hospital one afternoon, a baby was rushed into the nursery ward where my son was admitted. There was this loud shout and cry for help by a woman, screaming at the nurses and doctors to come to her aid. Behold, she had just delivered a baby in a certain private clinic but was referred to the government hospital because the child had a medical condition.

A man with a very tender baby stepped out of the car. I guess it was the father of the baby. You know what, the little baby was supported by oxygen. The oxygen cylinder was pushed behind the man by another man I supposed was his brother, (the baby's uncle). Long story cut short. In the end, the baby was attended to and was eventually resuscitated, and the life support was removed. Great!

I also remember another incident the year after I gave birth to my son. A sister in my church was rushed to the hospital emergency unit. She had cancer. The day I visited her at the hospital, she had life support on her. Though she later died, for a certain period, she lived through a life support machine using oxygen.

The biggest memory I will not forget, and our world won't forget in a hurry, was the period of COVID-19 in the year 2020, where the whole world was struck down by the disease. Though a lot of lives were lost, many who died and those who survived at a certain time were on life support machines breathing through oxygen. Amazing!

Conclusion

Have you or anyone close to you ever been supported by a life machine? Or, have you ever thought of the importance of oxygen being used as a life support? Have you ever been grateful to God for the oxygen you are breathing free of charge without a token paid for? There may be other uses of oxygen, but for the gift of life, oxygen, whether natural or chemical, is a great gift. Be thankful.
