What do you understand by food preservation?
Food preservation is a way of handling food in a way to slow it down from spoiling or stop it from spoiling while keeping it still in a good texture and flavour with it's nutritional value intact. Preservation of food increases and enhances the life of food and the safety of food.
Food preservation covers the chemical, physical and biological methods of stopping, eliminating and slowing down the natural process in food, there by extending it's shelf-life as a safe and edible product.
Explain 5 ways of preserving food.
In remote times before now, food preservation was done using ice, cold air and salt, likewise vinegar and even honey. Smoking was also used as a means of preserving food.
In modern ways, food is now freezed, canned, pasteurised, added chemicals and irradiated. Packaging materials has advanced and played a good role in today's food preservation. These are 5 ways;
Freezing: There's a high rate of deteriorating when food is cooler and bacterial action has limited or zero action rate when food is refrigerated, but freezing food stops it completely.
Strong concentration (added chemicals): Items like acid, salt, alcohol, sugar are high concentrations that creates environment to prevent micro organism growth.
Canned (exclude air): A seal of oil or fat prevents airborne microorganisms from having a direct contact t and spoiling food.
Pasteurised (heat): Mild heat treatment is used to kill bacteria that are harmful and extend the shelf life of the doors. Boiling food at high temperature destroys almost all microorganism.
Irradiation (remove moisture): Since microorganisms need moisture to grow, they die in dry conditions. Food dried using oven or warm air draws out moisture leaving the microorganisms dead.

The best way of preserving perishable food is by refrigerating. Here are few tips for preserving food.
Wash hands, utensils and surfaces.
Refrigerate or freeze the food item immediately.
For fresh produce, before storing, wash them.
Make sure the temperature of the refrigerator is correct.
Learn to store dish, raw meat and poultry in a correct way.
Ready to eat foods should be covered and kept separate.
People say eating freshly cooked food is better than eating preserved food. What's your opinion on this?
Fresh ingredients promotes good health and slow boosts nutrients and has it's flavour intact. Cooking the food kills microorganisms that are harmful and presents in raw foods.
Eating cooked meal reduces the risk of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and also boosts your immune system. I'm of the opinion that eating freshly cooked food is the best.

There are different methods of food preservation, both traditional and modern. Which ever way we want or best for us , we can always use that to preserve our foods.
