"I heard you pushed her."
"I heard you called her an old rag."
"She deserves to be treated with kindness, you know"
"Doesn't matter if she is in rags or gold."

These were the words I said to some kids who mocked at a lady for wearing "ugly clothes."

For context, the lady was the school's cleaner. Her favourite wear was a long flowing faded green ankara gown. You could easily spot her from a distance once you see an "I" toddling down the corridor with a mop and pail.

I never missed seeing her walk down to the lavatory for once, except on days I joined the school's devotion late. That only happens when I am sick. And I get sick once in every blue moon.

Stories flew that she was a widow with seven children. So it made sense when I saw her "slave herself" just to put food on her children's table.

I would say she was the "goodest" woman alive. She would ignore rude comments from her employer and fellow staff. Her face wore the hugest smile even when the kids at school made fun of her.

I did not understand why she would put up with the "bull sheets" until 10 years later.

"Ukpono beby!"
That was the name she often called me. So when I heard it yesterday, my neck stretched left and right to search for her. My eyes did a quick 360 scan around the mall.

Ladies, the woman who was standing about three steps away from me was someone I didn't know. She looked 16ish but her eyes were filled with wisdom.

Then it clicked. I know who she is!

The old uncomely cleaner lady was now a beauté. Her pale blue maxi gown had the most aesthetic prints I have ever seen.

We hugged tightly until her "oyibo" grandson with an American accent tugged at her to come get him some biscuits.

The 2-year-old did not deeply understand the significance of that silent long hug.

I still do not know the full background story of how she got transformed from a poor overworked but underpaid cleaner to someone who now flies Ibom Air at will. But her story taught me the value of having a positive approach to life.

It doesn't matter if people mock at you or throw you stones. Smile. Try not to curse at them. Be happy and continue grinding.

Everything good will come.

You are right, people who mostly wear single clothes are easy to identify. Though it is no a good habit anyways. I wish you success in your entry

Some people can barely afford food, let alone clothes. The lady fell into this category.

For people like that, it is best to be empathetic to them.

The kids did not understand this and ridiculed her instead.

It would have been best if they offered her clothes to wear if they had some to lend. Or remain kind to her.

This reminds me of the portion of the scriptures which says "Do to others what you will like others to do to you."

I'm glad that her story got changed for the better.

Sure, no matter the condition you find yourself in today, just keep your hope high that tomorrow will be better. I am happy the woman is reaping the fruit of her labour

I am happy too.

And she is giving back to society by helping others in need as well.

Oh my!

I must commend you for this masterpiece. You've written so well. While reading, I was imagining the scenes.

This is my motivation to keep pushing. Eventually, everything will work out.

Thanks for the invite. I'm wishing nothing but success in this contest.

Keep writing inspirational articles like this and the sky would be your stepping stone.

Best regards 🤗

Your words gladden my heart, KhayJhay.

Thank you for participating…..

What a powerful and inspiring story. It's incredible how the woman transformed from a humble, hard-working cleaner to a confident and beautiful woman, proving that life's challenges don't define our worth.

My father would say, "No one knows tomorrow. And that the creator always has a lot in store for us."

The lady is a testimony of these words.

It goes to show that our social status, current financial income or challenges do not determine our worth.

It might seem like in the movies but people's stories are always changing for the better. All we have to do is to believe, work smart and stay happy.

Everything good will come.

Thank you for the review.

I really liked it. You have presented a very beautiful story here. There are many things to understand in your story and to read it very well and to understand it very well, you have to read the story carefully. But there are many things to understand in your work. Best wishes to you.

I'm glad you caught this.

Everything word and expression in the story was used for a purpose.
They convey some thoughts I reserved for keen eyes like yours.

I feel like a code that just got cracked now. Lol.
