WHAT IS A HABIT?

When there is a formation of pattern in behavior which is displayed on regular basis, or are often carried out, then this can be recognized as a habit.

A habit can either be good or bad. It can be seen as good when the behavioral display is often displayed in the right course of actions. It can be bad when the behavioral display is often displayed towards taking action that perceived to be bad. So habit is a two-way traffic.

BREAKING BAD HABITS

It is not easy to break out from bad habit once it is formed. It becomes even more difficult to stop when it gets to the point of an addiction. For instance, at the beginning of every year, many people make some sound new year resolutions on how to stop one form form of bad habit or the other. After some time of taking steps that can make them stop that bad habit, they see themselves going back to the old habit. Of a truth, they may really mean to stop it, but could not stop it.

Now let's examine the questions generated by the host of this contest in order to arrive at a common ground. They are as follows:

  • What are some bad habits that are hard to stop, and why is it tough to quit them?

Some bad habits that may be hard to stop include:

  • Illicit Drug taking
  • Stealing
  • Chain-smoking
  • Alcoholism

The formation of these habits are some of the reasons that there are high rate of crimes in the society today. This is because of the negative effects these habits have on human health and the belief system.

Indeed, habits may be tough to quit. The reason to this is that our habitual behavior influences our personality, and then this forms our identity. Once a habit forms an identity, it means that such habit has degenerated to an extent it would be difficult to quit from. For instance, if a person has been involved in illicit drug taking, he /she has the identity as a drug addict. At this point, it would be difficult to quit from this habit formed.

  • How can we tell if a habit is just a habit or if it's more like an addiction? And what can we do to break them?

When we often think or do things that we enjoy and at our convenience then that's just a habit.

On the other hand, when we often think or do things even when it may cause injury or harm, then this is an addiction.

  • What are some challenges that people might face when trying to quit bad habits, and how can they overcome them?

The decision to quit from bad habits comes with some challenges. Some of the challenges include:

  • Rejection from friends:Those who are quitting from bad habits might face rejection friends who has been involved in the same circle with them.

To overcome this challenge, self realization or self discovery, is important. Check how your friends have impacted your life. Have they taken your your life to the positive or negative angle?

  • The reward gotten from bad habits might seem attractive to them so quitting from them might be a challenge.

To overcome this challenge, also know that the rewards from imbibing on good habits is more enjoyable.

  • Lack of suitable rehabilitation centers to facilitate a quick recovery of addicted persons is also a challenge that made it difficult for them to with from the addictions.

Our government at all levels should provide adequate facilities like a topnotch rehabilitation centers to effect a quick recovery of addicted persons.

  • Lack of support from close relatives or friends can make it difficult for addicted persons to quit.

If addicted persons can get massive support from their close relatives, it will enable them to quit their addictions.

  • How can we support and encourage others to quit their bad habits without being judgmental or pushy?
    We can do it
BY THE FOLLOWING:

Helping them to relocate to a new environment will go a long way to help them quit from their habits as they will not be able to reach out to those habitual items.

Government at all levels should ensure the provision of rehabilitation centers to cater for those in need of assistance in situations of addictions

we should not abandon those in addictions especially those showing the tendency to change from their habits.

Forming support groups to help those in addiction will show a sense of belonging to them. This can shift their minds away from needing the attention of their friends who see nothing wrong with addiction

CONCLUSION

Bad habits can easily be formed, but may not be easy to quit from it. While indulging in some practices, always think of what the consequences are before.

We should also not neglect, abandon, or be judgemental to those in addictions but rather, be of support to help them out the ugly situation. This will help to renew their mind and make good efforts to quit from their bad habits.
