Multivitamins are medicines we take to supplement the nutrients that are not contained in the food we eat, nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, etc. Conditions in our lives may cause us to take these multivitamins Even if we eat foods that contain the nutrients because the content in our food may not be enough. In this post, I will be focusing on multivitamins.
Have you ever taken a multivitamin before? Why?
Yes, I have taken multivitamins on several occasions. The reason I took multivitamins is it was prescribed for me by my doctor during my pregnancy with my daughter.
You know pregnant women are prone to deficiency of blood, and they may suffer from anemia. So to prevent this, Fesolate and folic acid were prescribed for me, and I took them religiously. They worked for me, and I entered the theater for delivery with the PCV (packed cell volume) 36, and no blood transfusion was needed. After the CS (Cesarean section), I was discharged with a PCV of 32. Multivitamins are good, and they work.
What are the good and bad of multivitamins for our health?
Let me begin with the goods of multivitamins. I just mentioned in the preceding sub-heading that Fesolate and folic acid helped boost my red blood cells, and I went for CS without a blood transfusion. Therefore, multivitamins supply us with the nutrients we don't get from our diets; for example, multivitamins that contain vitamins C, B, and calcium can help us boost our immune systems, improve the function of our brains, and help us build strong bones.
Having known the good of multivitamins for our health, let's have a look at the bad of multivitamins for our health. Multivitamins will only do us bad if and only if we excessively take them. For example, if we excessively take vitamin A, iron, and zinc, we may sadly suffer from liver damage and gastrointestinal distress because they can be highly toxic when taken excessively. We may even experience stomach ache, diarrhea, vomiting, etc should we take any vitamin excessively. Therefore, the bottom line is: don't take multivitamins excessively; follow the prescription from your doctor.
Do you believe that everyone should take multivitamins, or are they only necessary for certain groups of people?
Taking multivitamins depends on the nutrient content in the diet of an individual. If a person feels his diets contain all the vitamins his body needs, then there will be no need for multivitamins, but if he is not too sure of the nutrient content in his diet, he should supplement them with multivitamins. But there are conditions one may be in, and she needs multivitamins Even when they are contained in her diet because they are never enough for conditions such as pregnancy.
What do you think about the differences between synthetic and natural vitamins? Which do you prefer?
Natural vitamins are better because they come with fewer side effects, whereas synthetic vitamins come with some side effects because of the process of producing them, and some chemicals are used for preservation. Therefore natural vitamins are the best, and I prefer natural vitamins. But in a situation where I don't trust the process of the natural vitamins, like if I don't eat them directly from fruits, I would rather take the synthetic ones that have undergone laboratory tests and are found fit for human health.
In your opinion, how important is it to consult a healthcare professional before starting a multivitamin regimen?
It's very pertinent to consult a healthcare professional before beginning a multivitamin regimen. Remember I said earlier in this post that taking multivitamins excessively can cause us harm. We only know if the quantity we are taking is not excessive if we consult a healthcare professional because they will prescribe the right dosage for us. May we always take multivitamins as prescribed by a healthcare professional and enjoy the benefits that accompany the consumption of multivitamins!
