Good day dear friends, happy Easter celebration to you. Trusting God y'all are doing great? We thank God for making us see a day like this.
It's another opportunity and a great pleasure to participate in this contest; "obesity". Kindly read through as I highlight some key notes about obesity and how you can live a healthy lifestyle.
What is Obesity?
Many a times, we often use obesity and overweight interchangeably. Sometime we'll see a plumpy fellow and conclude the person is obese.
Obesity is a medical condition whereby the body fat which is in excess has accumulated to a level that has some serious negative effects on health. This could actually result in reduced life expectancy and sometimes increasing the risks of other health problems.
Obesity differs from being overweight cos overweight is when your weight is above the benchmark weight for a specific body type while obesity is an excessive amount of body fat and at least 10 % over standard weight.
Majorly, the contributory factors that give rise to obesity include bad nutrition and lack of physical exercise.
Obesity when not properly managed increases one's likelihood of different diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, difficulty in breathing while sleeping, osteoarthritis and also some certain types of cancer.
Explain three lifestyles that lead to obesity
- Dietary habits: Consuming foods high in calories; drinking sugary drinks like soda, sweetened tea or coffee; regular consumption of fast foods; eating large portions of food than needed; all these are dietary lifestyle habits that results in accumulation of too much sugars in the blood which then gets converted into fats and gets stored in the adipose tissues. Is such habits are not checkmated and regulated, it places one at the risk of obesity.
- Physical activities: living a sedentary lifestyle, not engaging in physical exercise and staying for too long under the screen couldn't increase one's risk of being obese
- Poor sleep habits: Not getting enough sleep or having a poor sleeping habit often results in weight gain which when not properly managed, could result in obesity.
How can stress and lack of sleep lead to obesity?
Stress and obesity
When one is stressed, the level of cortisol is elevated. Cortisol promotes fat storage.
Stress can also lead to emotional eating. This is very common with me as I tend to consume high coloric drinks and junks each time I'm stressed. Stress can also rsir in poor food choices just like me opting for junks each time I'm stressed.
Lack of Sleep and obesity
Lack of sleep result in disruption of hormones like insulin and leptin which are important hormones that help regulate appetite and metabolism.
Sleep deprivation can so disrupt the hormone balance in that one tend to have increased ghrelin (a hormone that stimulates appetite) while it decreases leptin (a hormone that suppresses appetite).
What is BMI? How to calculate BMI, share ranges.
BMI is an acronym for Body Mass Index. It is a measurement tool used to assess weight status of individuals. It gives a general indication whether a person's weight is within a healthy range for their heights.
To calculate BMI, the follow steps should be followed:
- Measure weight ( measurement should be in kilograms)
- Measure height (in meters)
BMI = weight(kg)/height(m)²
BMI ranges
The World Health Organization (WHO) gave the following BMI ranges:
- BMI < 18.5: Underweight
- BMI = 18.5 - 24.9: Normal range
- BMI = 25 - 29.9: Overweight
- BMI ≥ 30 : Obese
Calculate your BMI and tell us which range you are
My data:
- Weight: 76kg
- Height: 1.78m
BMI = 76/1.78x1.78
= 23.98
My BMI shows that I'm normal weight.
I'm inviting my friends @vickyson @ashley-p @esthyfashion to also participate in this contest.
