Hello to all my steemian friends,

Today I am very happy to share my post on a very interesting topic, "a periodontal disease" organized by @helengutier2 in Healthy Steem.

🦷(1) Do you know what is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is the result of not taking good care of the mouth and teeth.

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is caused by inflammation and infection of the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold our teeth in place.

It is mostly caused by poor brushing and flossing habits. This allows plaque - a sticky layer of bacteria - to accumulate and harden on the teeth.

Symptoms

It starts with swollen, red and bleeding gums.

The gums feel tender to the touch.

The gums start bleeding.

Bad breath starts coming out which does not go away quickly.

Pain starts while chewing etc.

If left untreated, it spreads to the bones around the gums.

🦷(2) Write some causes of periodontal disease

Accumulation of plaque on teeth is the biggest cause of gum disease. Plaque contains many types of bacteria that infect our gums. That is why if we do not clean our mouth and teeth properly, then the chances of getting this disease are high.

Genetics can also be a cause of gum disease.

If our parents, grandparents, or siblings have gum disease, then we are also likely to get gum disease.

The bacteria that cause gum disease can spread from one person to another.

However, short-term contact does not cause gum disease. But repeated long-term contact through saliva (such as kissing) increases the risk of gum disease.

There are some risk factors for gum disease such as smoking, stress, diabetes, hormonal changes in puberty or pregnancy, etc.

🦷(3) Can you tell us how periodontal disease is classified?

We can classify gum disease into four stages.

(1) Gingivitis

This is the initial stage of gum disease. In this stage, the gums become red, swollen and bleeding also starts from the gums. There is no damage to the bone in this stage. And with proper treatment, gingivitis is cured.

(2) Early periodontitis

In this stage, bacteria enter under our gums, affecting the supporting bone. And the gums start moving away from the teeth, due to which pockets are formed around them. Plaque and bacteria hide in these pockets.

(3) Moderate periodontitis

At this stage, bacteria start to destroy the ligaments, soft tissues and bones that hold our teeth in place. Bad breath and pus appear around our gums, and pain begins.

(4) Advanced periodontitis

At this stage, as the gum disease worsens, bone loss continues. This causes our teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

🦷(4) How can we prevent periodontal disease?

To avoid periodontal disease, first of all, we should keep our mouth clean. Brush thoroughly at least twice daily.
Floss at least once a day to clean between all your teeth and gums.
You should get your teeth checked at least once a year.
You should visit the dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleaning.
You should not smoke. Tobacco should not be chewed.

Healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables should be eaten.

Antiseptic mouthwash should be used.

However, if someone develops periodontal disease due to some serious genetic reason, then he should go to a gum specialist (periodontist).

The dentist or periodontist examines the pockets around our teeth.

Only after examining the pockets, it is known that the deeper the pockets, the more serious the gum disease.
The doctor (periodontist) will treat the disease according to the type of gum disease.
The most important thing is to keep your mouth completely clean and get regular check-ups and professional cleaning from the doctor.
