Prolonged cough

Cough can be disturbing to the point of making one lost appetite. It can be disturbing and makes one feel uncomfortable especially at nights. When cough starts, it's important to treat it in order to avoid the condition from getting worse.

Cough is a reflex action that is meant to free the airways. There are many reasons why people have a cough. Some of the causes of cough are:

• Viral infection

• Respiratory infection

• Common cold and flu

• Allergies etc.

There are many ways to treat a cough, such as:

1. Inhaling steam

2. Taking cough syrup *(not for babies)

3. Use of antibiotics for the treatment of the bacteria that causes cough

4. Use hot water and hot balm. This you use hot water to press the chest area and then use hot balm to rub. This is suitable for people who have a cough as a result of a cold.

5. Nebulization

Nebulization involves using compressed air through a ‘nebulizer’ to convert liquid medications into a mist that can then be breathed in by the patient.

Cough can stretch up to one month and even more. I know this because my children and I have been battling a cough for 5 weeks now, though we're recovering gradually.

• If a cough is left untreated, it will get worse and may cause pains in the throat, chest and ear. And at some point, it causes a headache too.

• It gives sleepless nights. For example, for the past two weeks, my children and I have been having sleepless nights due to being woken up by a cough and finding difficulty sleeping.

• Cough caused by asthma can lead to fainting or death

• Cough can lead to fatigue and loss of weight

• It can lead to loss of voice

• It causes difficulty with breathing

Yes. For five weeks now, my children and I have been coughing. Before, I thought it was just a mere cough and I got a cough syrup, but no, it didn't stop. Due to the severity of the cough, we went to the hospital on Tuesday last week because it was more than two weeks, the home remedies and self-medication didn't work. That was why we headed to the hospital for a professional drug prescription and treatment.

For more than a week, we went to the hospital. The cough has not stopped, though it has subsided. I just hope by the end of this week, we will fully recover.
