Lung cancer is very common worldwide, mostly affecting smokers and in most cases secondhand smokers.

Meaning of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a disease of the lungs, it is the type that begins in the lungs, as a result of abnormal cells in the lung tissue growing and multiplying without control.

Types of Lung Cancer

Based on my research, I discovered that there are two common types of cancers;

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
This is the most common type, responsible for about 85% of the cases
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
This is less common, mostly caused by heavy smoking.

Symptoms

The symptoms of lung cancer is based on the stages of the disease;

Early Stage

Persistent cough
Difficulty breathing
Chest pain
Changed voice
Occurrence of other respiratory infections

Advanced stage

Coughing up blood
Lack of appetite
Weight loss
Fatigue
Bone pain in most cases
Neurological symptoms
Swelling in the face or neck

Smoking: The most common cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoking. Also, issues of secondhand smoke may result in lung cancer.
Exposure to radon gas: It is a natural radioactive gas that accumulates in buildings, and increases the risk of lung cancer.
Air pollution: Situations of polluted air, also increase the risk of lung cancer.
Age: Older age or people over 65 years of age.
Genetic: Family history and hereditary may result in lung cancer.
Previous radiation therapy: For a person that might have had radiation therapy around the chest region.

Treatment

Undergo surgery to remove the affected lung tissue.
Make use of medications that can kill the cancer cells.
Undergo a high radiation therapy to kill cancer cells.
Take medications that help to immune system fight cancer.

Prevention

Avoid smoking
Avoid areas where people smoke
Follow safety protocols against asbestos
Test your environment and homes for radon gas
Endeavor to get regular check-ups
