Cholesterol is fat like substance that play an important role in our body. A large amount of cholecterol is produced in liver and it is about 80% of all cholesterol, about 20% of cholesterol we receive with food. There are some products rich in cholesterol like meat, milk, cheese, butter.
Cholesterol is not dissolve in water and not fall apart in blood that means often it can be freely travel in blood throughout blood vessels.
The role of cholesterol is to be an important part of cell membrane therefore it is important for our cells and organs. The other important role it is a part of some important Hormones that our body needs but also Vitamin D. There is cholesterol in our bile and that helps us to digest our food.
There are two very well known types of cholesterol LDL that means low density lipoprotein and HDL or high density lipoprotein.
LDL is considered to be more dangerous because of producing plaque in vessels and that can block arteries and be a cause of heart attack, stroke. HDL helps get rid of LDL therefore, it is good cholesterol.
The total cholesterol level is below 5 mmol/l. HDL is above 1mmol/l and LDL below 4 mml/l Source
In order to check your cholesterol level, it is usually asked not to have meal before blood test, because due to cholesterol in natural products that can cause a false result of test.
Usually the doctor will take your blood from arm vein and that will be sent to laboratory and usually will take about a day for the result to come back.
There is another kind of test is often done in pharmacies where they have check points and patients can have a quick finger prick test, blood will be taken from finger on special test strip and that will be placed into machine that relatively quickly will give you result.
HDL has ability to bind LDL cholesterol and transport it to liver where it will be broken into particles and brought out of the body.
I hope you have found interesting information for you and I would like to invite for this contest following users @vickyson, @lusciouslucy, @mole1
