Strange medical condition-Black hairy tongue

A black hairy tongue, which is also known as lingua villosa nigra, is a rare but benign condition. It is characterized by hypertrophic filiform papillae, which form a dense black surface on the tongue. Although scary to look at, a black tongue is usually not a sign of anything serious. You may also notice that your tongue is slightly furry. But be sure, they are not hairs. Both of these are symptoms of a temporary condition called black hairy tongue.

Ddx of BHT- acanthosis nigricans, hairy oral leukoplakia, addison disease, peutz jeghers syndrome, malignant melanoma & black staining over the tongue(due to bismuth, iron & food colorings)

Symptoms

Male sex, older age, poor oral hygiene, xerostomia, oxidizing mouthwashes, excessive coffee consumption, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, oral infections, radiation, and drugs such as tetracyclines are some of the predisposing conditions for black hairy tongue. Black hairy tongue is usually asymptomatic but sometimes patients may complain of nausea, halitosis & altered taste

Diagnosis And Treatment

Generally, a black-haired tongue does not require harsh and quick treatment or medication to get rid of the appearance of Harry. Black hairy tongue usually doesn't require treatment. Practicing good oral hygiene & eliminating factors that contribute to the disease help to resolve the condition

Clean your tongue daily twice with toothbrush or tongue scraper, it can eliminate the Black hair buildup on the tongue. Use of a mouth wash liquid or a solution containing hydrogen peroxide or wash with baking soda also helps remove the Black hairy tongue.
