Why and when Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated?
'Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. This festival is most elaborated in Indian states like Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
The festival is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, in Hinduism, 10-day festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, the god of prosperity and wisdom. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.
Some facts about Ganesh Chaturthi which might surprise you.
- The First Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration Dates Back to The Era Of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj around 1600s. This was also used in India's freedom struggle.
- Bal Gangadhar Tilak Started Public Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations In 1893 To Fight The British. Also till this date, Ganesha ji is also worshipped in other countries with India.
- Lord Ganesha Is Worshipped In Countries Like Thailand, Cambodia, China, Japan, Nepal & Afghanistan.
- Here's a belief or a superstition probably : It’s Considered Unlucky To Look At The Moon During Ganesh Chaturthi.

Food.
As in other festivals, food occupies an important place in Ganesh Chaturthi. As Lord Ganesha is believed to have a sweet tooth, Modaks (sweet dumplings filled with jaggery and coconut) are typically offered to him.
