Arrested

South Africa 1995

My Abuela would say "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". but she never got to tell me what to do when you catch your fiancé bonking his secretary on his office desk or when you get sacked from your job of six years for no reasonable reason or when you wake up at five on a Saturday morning and the next thing you see is yourself being arrested for a murder you have no freeking clue about.

"You have the right to remain the right to remain silent, for anything you say would be used against you in the court of law" the officer recited the Miranda rights harshly.

"Arrested", I stuttered "Arrested for what" I asked.

"Arrested for the murder of Daniel Craig" he replied.

"Daniel Craig?, the senator son" I asked again. he look at me with disgust, like I was denying knowing the victim. "Who's going to take care of Walter" I continued. Walter is my cat's name, he had been a stray I found close to my building and I had named him after the main character of one of my favourite movies 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' . he pushed me downstairs to his car, on reaching outside. I discovered my nosy neighbour Mrs Mathew looking through her window. Even the Pascals were outside with their kids "God, is it what my life has turn into" I whisper silently.

The ride to the station was terrifying, I kept hoping the officer would look back at me with a big grin and say it was a joke or that he will get a call telling him I wasn't guilty after all.

He opened the door and pulled me out with handcuffs on my hands. he pushed me into an open station door were people were bustling about, on reaching a desk, a man look up from where he was sitting.

"So, this is the slut?" he asked the officer looking with a sneer.

"Yes Sir" the officer answered. I try to put in that they were mistaken and that they had gotten the wrong person and that I have never meet Daniel Craig in my life except on TV or in the papers but from the look if their face, I was sure they weren't going to believe a word I say.

And as I was being pushed inside an empty cell to await trail, I discovered something, for the first time in my life, I was alone.
