My experience in learning English has been awful owing to the fact that we learn every now and then. English language can not be exhausted as new world keep emanating day by day. In most countries studying English language isn't compulsory but in Nigeria where I come free, it is like the most used language even more than the mother tongue. English is the official language of 53 countries. That is a lot of people to meet and speak to.
According to Ziaul Haque:
The English language is somewhat ‘GLOBAL’ or widespread because it has reached many nations but it is not truly an ‘INTERNATIONAL’ language! Actually, it will be international when all the countries accept it or if the words from all the existing languages are added to it or if an entirely new language is created with the presence of words, grammar etc. from all the current languages in the world.
Learning English for has not been easy I must confess, more ever I had a father who was very good at buying books to keep my busy on my tenses. My listening and speaking skills was bad though. After some years I started to study English by myself again and now I am taking a course of English and I become better with this language but my big problem is sometimes practise it and it is not enough.
I can still remember when I could not write 100 words in my essay exam. That was really bad. We were introduced to books like Eze goes to school, an old book like things fall apart, all these to help my vocabulary and foster my English learning process. When it got too bad my parents had to involve an English teacher which was paid extra to teach me at home. It later occur to me that words are formed from combination of letters, so if you can pronounce the letters then the word itself would be a piece of cake.
However that my own view of how words are formed, others might have a different idea view about this statement, but one thing is sure, we all need English on way or the other.
I have learnt this few ideas in my study of english:
Be confident in speaking and writing English, especially in informal settings (e.g., WhatsApp groups, casual online forums, gathering with friends and close relatives, etc.); control fear of making mistakes by thinking that we are all learning together, anyway, so, mistakes are common, and even encouraged, so that we all can learn from them,
Always be willing to learn about new things when you are a newbie, and always be willing to learn still about new things when you are deemed as a pro (all so-called pros were once newbies), AND share the knowledge you have learned to fellow learners, newbies and pros alike, so that you can learn as you teach,
Admit our own mistakes when learning English, and point out mistakes made by others in a civil manner, for we can only grow and learn through our mistakes,
Read random entries and also peruse (if any) the etymological sections of authoritative monolingual English dictionaries (printed or online), such as Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
Write every day, it can be only several lines or many paragraphs, it can be in form of random free-writing scribbles or well-organized essays, just keep writing — which ties up quite nicely with the last three tips below;
Practice
Practice and practise
English language connects people together....
In conclusion, learning is a lifelong process, and this is especially true when learning English. As long as we are willing to listen and read, with enough time and practice, we surely can speak and write better each day — at least that’s how I roll.
