A typical country's history will begin with the initial establishment and settlement of that region. The arrival of indigenous peoples is a prominent feature of this period, which coincided with European colonizers eager to plunder natural resources. The territories of Colombia used to be a bastion of power where marginalized indigenous populations were mainly victims of displacement. It was during this time that new governments were formed, written constitutions were drafted, and national identities were established. Nation formation was often a contentious process, involving disputes over power, wealth and identity.
