Greetings steemians
I’ll be writing today about plagiarism and its ills on steemit.
Plagiarism is a word which is derived from Latin , Plagiarus which means “kidnapper or seducer or plunderer” as stated by Google.
Plagiarism refers to the copying of another person’s ideas, text or other creative work and presenting it as one’s own especially without the person’s permission.
Cases of plagiarism have been noticed in journalism, speeches, motivational talks, academics, quotes among others

Often, the practice of plagiarism occurs in many different ways and some of the most common forms will be deliberated on below;

  1. DIRECT PLAGIARISM:
This is a kind of plagiarism which involves word for word transcription of the portion or a section of someone else’s without adding attributes or even quotation marks. This usually invites sanctions and suspensions especially when it involves academics.

  2. ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM:
This happens when a person neglects or doesn’t make an effort to Cite their sources or the person intentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words or misquotes their sources. One of the main cause of accidental plagiarism either being disorganized or just being confused. For example not understanding how to paraphrase or to make use quotations properly.

  3. SELF PLAGIARISM:
This is another form of plagiarism whereby one republishes a new work or the writer reuses some parts of an already published text meanwhile he is writing a new piece. We should also take not that self plagiarism involves the reuse of an already published work of same author.

  4. MOSAIC PLAGIARISM:
This kind of plagiarism is sometime called “patch writing” it occurs when a student borrows a phrase From a source without using quotation marks. You need to restate the concept and fit it into the wording of your paper, making your point clear. This involves reading the source, thinking about it, and then rewriting that concept in a completely different way.

HOW CAN YOU AVOID PLAGIARISM?

~keep track of the sources which you consult in your research. By dropping a link or a reference.
~Show a sign of recognition or credit the original author in an intext citation and reference list.
~Give quotation from your sources then add your ideas to it

~EXAMPLE OF CITATION~

Books help one to write down and keep information.

"As an intellectual object, a book is prototypically a composition of such great length that it takes a considerable investment of time to compose and still considered as an investment of time to read".

From the above information, it has only one original sentence:

Books help one to write down and keep information

The next sentence is directly copied from a source without any changes made, thus quoted:

As an intellectual object, a book is prototypically a composition of such great length that it takes a considerable investment of time to compose and still considered as an investment of time to read.

CONCLUSION
It is very advisable that we cite our sources of information whenever we take them from other sources in order to make our post very unique and original.
