Plagiarism

The act of presenting the words, ideas, or expressions of another author as one's own original work is known as plagiarism. Depending on the organization, different definitions of plagiarism apply in educational contexts.

This might happen on purpose or accidentally if you forget to include quotation marks or credit the original author, artist, inventor, or source of the concept somewhere in your writing. Even if forgetfulness is the truth, if your motives were discovered, they would undoubtedly be called into question.

THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER ONLINE DICTIONARY DEFINES "PLAGIARIZING" AS

to steal and misrepresent (another's thoughts or words) as one's own Source

to use another person's work without giving them credit Source

to represent as fresh and unique a concept or item that was obtained from another source Source

Basically, Or to put it another way, plagiarism is a form of fraud. It entails taking another person's work as well as lying about it later. Source

Citation
It is not sufficient to simply note that the “text source is Wikipedia”. A link to the specific Wikipedia page where the content came from is required. If numerous sources were used, adding the source after each separate idea is recommended.
Every copy/pasted sentence should be either in quotes “” or formatted using the > markup.
Every paraphrased paragraph, sentence, or idea should have a reference as close to it as reasonably possible to indicate its origin.

The passage above was borrowed from a post by @cryptokannon. It will be deemed plagiarism if I post this passage verbatim without giving her credit.

I'll simply cite the appropriate author and source for this passage. I can avoid plagiarism by doing this.

Types of Plagiarism

  1. Direct Plagiarism - Without credit or quotation marks, direct plagiarism is the verbatim reproduction of a passage from another person's writing.

  2. Self-Plagiarism - Self-plagiarism happens when a student turns in their own prior work without getting permission from all of the teachers involved.

  3. Mosaic Plagiarism - When a student uses terms from a source without putting them in quote marks or comes up with synonyms for the author's words while adhering to the original's overall organization and meaning, they are committing mosaic plagiarism.

  4. Accidental Plagiarism - When someone quotes their sources incorrectly or fails to cite them, this is known as accidental plagiarism.

How to avoid Plagiarism - It's crucial to always correctly cite your sources in order to prevent plagiarism. Use your own words to interpret the topic and paraphrase the text or material to avoid plagiarism.
