Hello Steem family! My name is Augustine and I'm here to discuss on Achievement3 which topic is on plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism.
Firstly
What is Plagiarism?
Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:
Therefore, plagiarism is the act of stealing someone's work, write-ups or ideas and applying it on your work pretending to be the owner
Secondly
Why should you avoid plagiarism?
At its case, plagiarism is an ethical issue. A writer who submits plagiarized work is committing theft. Therefore, One should avoid plagiarism by not copying and framing people's work because this act takes away one's respect not only in the community and worldwide also it compromises your integrity and make you lose the financial aids or leadership roles in the society.
Additionally, it takes away credits and profits from the original creator of the work which may cause more trouble if the source takes legal action against you.
5 ways to avoid plagiarism
Fortunately, it's not stressful or offensive trying to avoid plagiarism knowing fully well what it really is. There are five ways to avoid plagiarism.
1 Cite your source
When publishing a write-up, always add a quotation Mark to tell if it's plagiarized or not for instance giving informations about the write-up, the name of the publisher and date it was published.
2 Include quotations
In this way of avoiding plagiarism, quotation marks are attached to text to signify the words aren't yours. also direct quotes should indicate the source to enable the readers know where or who the quote is from. If you insert a source’s words into your writing, verbatim, one of the most simple yet obvious ways to avoid plagiarism is by using quotation marks.
3 Paraphrase
Paraphrasing is rewriting a source’s ideas or information into your own words, without changing its meaning. But be careful—paraphrasing can lead into plagiarism if done incorrectly.
4 Present your own idea
Instead of stealing the source’s ideas or words, explore your own ideas on what you really want to say about it, something really unique and different to contribute in your writings that's exactly yours. Have it in mind that when framing works that isn't yours, you need some guidelines to avoid plagiarism.
5 Use a plagiarism checker
While conducting your research on a topic, some phrases or sentences may seem familiar and in that process it may lead to plagiarism so it's advisable to use either an online plagiarism checker or any plagiarism application to avoid been plagiarized on contents in your writings
Citation
As stated in the seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2020), the ethical principles of scientific publication are designed to ensure the integrity of scientific knowledge and to protect the intellectual property rights of others. As the Publication Manual explains, authors are expected to correct the record if they discover errors in their publications; they are also expected to give credit to others for their prior work when it is quoted or paraphrased (pp. 254-257).
I hope with this little explanations on #plagiarism and #citation we all can learn how to be creative independently on ourselves and not depend on someone else's work.
