Indonesian national hero Ir. H. Djuanda Kartawidjaja was immortalized in new banknotes issued by Bank Indonesia. Djuanda's face is on the Rp. 50,000 banknote issued in 2022. Djuanda's figure has also appeared on the same nominal denomination since 2016. Djuanda is the son of Raden Kartawidjaja and Nyi Monat. He was born on January 14 1911 in Tasikmalaya, West Java. He received his primary education at Hollandsch Inlandsch School (HIS), then moved to Europeesche Lagere School (ELS) in Tasikmalaya and graduated in 1924. After that, he studied at the Hoogere Burgerschool te Bandoeng (HBS) in Bandung and graduated in 1929. Djuanda then continued his education at the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THS) majoring in civil engineering. He graduated in 1933. In 1930 or 1931, Djuanda was appointed Chairman of the Indonesian Students Association. At that time, young Djuanda also joined an organization called Paguyuban Pasundan and became a member of Muhammadiyah. After graduating, Djuanda was appointed as a high school teacher and teacher school managed by the Muhammadiyah College in Jakarta. A year later he became Principal at Muhammadiyah High School for 5 years. At the beginning of the founding of the Republic of Indonesia, he was appointed as Head of the Republic of Indonesia Railway Department which was in a neglected state. In 1946, Djuanda was appointed Junior Minister of Transportation and Head of the Railway Department. During his career in the Indonesian government he served as Junior Minister once, as Minister fourteen times and as First Minister three times.
