PLAGIARISM

Source

Plagiarism simply means taking someone’s work and passing it off as one's work. Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines "plagiarism" as “to use (another's production) without crediting the source, commit literary theft and to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source”.

Forms of Plagiarism

There are different forms of plagiarism which include but not limited to;

  • Complete Plagiarism
  • Source-based Plagiarism
  • Direct Plagiarism
  • Self-Plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism
  • Mosaic Plagiarism
  • Accidental Plagiarism

Consequences of plagiarism

There are various consequences of plagiarism which can be personal, professional, legal, and even ethical. In cases of plagiarism, ignorance is never an excuse and plagiarists are being caught at an alarming rate, thanks to detection software.

Students can be suspended or even expelled from school when they have plagiarism allegations. Their academic record will be dented and reflect ethics offense which will be detrimental to the student.

The legal repercussions can be very serious as copyright laws are binding and one cannot use another person’s material without citation or reference. Some plagiarism can be seen as a criminal offense and may even lead to a prison sentence. For a professional writer, plagiarism is a serious ethical and legal issue.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

According to Raimo Streefkerk, plagiarism can be avoided with the following steps:

  • Step 1: Keep track of sources

Ensure to keep a tab of your sources while making researches. This will help you to reference your work properly and you can always go back to it. Keep note of all the sources you use such as websites, magazine articles, and videos, books, and journal articles.

  • Step 2: Use a quotation and paraphrase it.
If you want to pass a piece of information while writing, you can either decide to paraphrase it or quote it in its original context.

Quoting
This simply means copying a piece of information and giving credit to the author with the message enclosed in quotation marks. An example is; “the environmental condition of Rumuagholu landfill is depleted and the state government must do something about it"(Mirian, 2021, p. 123).

Paraphrasing
This is using your own words and understanding to explain another person’s idea. When paraphrasing, you must rewrite the passage without altering the meaning of the original content. To do this, you must ensure to use synonymous words in the original context.

Conclusion

Plagiarism is notably a crime and must be stopped as ignorance is not an excuse. It harms the reputation of the defaulters whether students or professionals. People must be encouraged to desist from plagiarism.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
